727 not shifting right now fixed!
« on: June 15, 2012 - 04:35:43 PM »
I took my 73 Challenger out for it's 1st test drive yesterday and the transmission doesn't up shift right or down shift right. It takes off ok in 1st but will not shift into 2nd till about 25mph and won't shift into drive or 3rd till between 50-55 mph. When you slow down it shifts down into 2nd at about 40 mph but shifts down into 1st gear fine at a slower speed. The transmission was just rebuilt with a transgo shift kit installed. I'm not a transmission guy but I have adjusted the kick down linkage per the shop manual and even tried changing from that but can't get it to shift at lower speeds. Any help would be great but I can always take it to the transmission place that rebuilt it but I hate leaving my old cars anywhere. Thanks in advance.

Something is still not right with the kickdown. Take some pics and post them of your set up.

Here are some pictures of the kickdown linkage. It looks the same as my 71 340 RT has on it. Terry when you adjust the upper linkage making it shorter makes it shift sooner?

Yes, shorter is sooner. You need to shorten it.............. a bunch. You should be able to make it shift too soon. Nice looking linkage also by the way!  :naughty:

Terry I turned it in or made it shorter at the upper adjustment. It seemed to make the 1st to 2nd change a little better but no different on the 2nd to 3rd. I went back and made it shorter yet almost out af any adjustment and went for another drive. The 1st to 2nd is at about 18 mph and the 2nd to 3rd is at about 51 mph. Still downshifts into 2nd at 40 mph. I think something is not right with the valve body after all this.

I got the Challenger back today from the transmission shop that rebuilt it and the problem was the bottom kickdown linkage rod. It seems it was either bent or there are different lenghts. It would not let the kickdown lever on the sector shaft move all the back holding it in about 1/2 inch. We bent the rod and put it back on and transmission know shift up and down better. I need to adjust the kickdown linkage as it still shift a little to soon but it was a easy fix I never noticed. I took a picture of the rod for everyone to see.
