Herb McCandless
« on: March 24, 2010 - 12:09:01 AM »
Herb McCandless, Mr. 4-Speed, showed up to our Mopar muscle car club meeting tonight here in Albuquerque.  We had an informal pot luck dinner and Herb talked for an hour+ about his race days with Sox & Martin, life as a product tester, all the famous people he's worked with during the glory days of drag racing, and lots of engine/tranny/rear end stories and tips.  He also discussed oil filters, oil additives, 5.7/6.1 install and had jokes to boot.  He loves to talk, is full of energy and is just a really nice person to be around.  Got to sit next to him at dinner and shake his hand. He autographed photos of his famous Dart in a wheel stand for everyone in the club.  What a hoot to spend a night with a Mopar drag racing legend and listen to stories of what life was like with the Sox & Martin race team.  :cooldancing:

Cool picture of his wheelie at E-town..

I actually took video of that semi-final rd. & the final rd. when Dick Landy broke the axle in his Challenger on the final on my Super 8 camera back then...
I think it was 1974,  if I remember right....

I was very cool to hear stories straight from the guy who was behind the wheel.  Back then these guys had to do everything themselves to keep their cars running for both testing and racing.  Must of been a hell of a ride back then and he clearly loved every minute.  :burnout:

What a cool thing that was! You dont get too many chances to meet and interact with a living legend.

My business partner and I met Herb when we went to Ronnie Sox's funeral. Nice man. Also talked with him a while on the Hot Rod Power Tour last year. Great guy.
