Anyone had problems with PRW water pumps
« on: October 09, 2018 - 09:33:35 pm »
I have a PRW water pump on my 340 (stroked to 416) and  cannot get it to seal. Obviously something isnt flat (pump or the timing chain cover, but I suspect its the WP and I was just wondering of anyone has had issues. Yesterday (3rd startup of the engine) the gasket blew out of the right side and it was leaking out the top as well. I attributed it to the gasket being misaligned during installation and a inferior gasket. I replaced it with a new Felpro gasket, used Felpro gasket sealer (not RTV, the black stuff) and reinstalled it. As soon as I filled the radiator it began leaking out the top. I put a cooling system pressure tester on it and pumped it up and it was squirting. I went back and tightened everything which helps a little but not enough. I am thinking of going to a Milodon WP as it looks like the stock one but is a high flow.

Throw a straight edge up to the timing cover....  Then theres the issue of small block water pump bolts being into water so the threads rust & you need sealant on the bolts....   Thing is the rusty threads should be chased but it takes a really long tap to do that...

Yeah I will when I take a part again. This is a brand new engine (rebuilt) and it was cooked during the rebuild. I apply sealant on the threads of the long bolts each time. In this case, it isnt leaking around the bolts, it is definitely leaking around the gasket, you can see it oozing out the top and sides. It seems to be 2 distinct spots, the top right and the right side.
