Bore size limits valve size in the 318, but you could stroke it to a 390, notch the cylinders, and do some indy 360 heads. You are better off doing a 360 block build tho

You can get to 375-400 HP, but 500 HP? Nitrous Oxide, Supercharger, or Turbo...Oh, and better have some good sh*t in the bottom end, and a spare block.

Here is an article that Mopar Muscle did a while back. There goal a streetable 400 hp 318 that doesn't use expensive exotic race parts, in fact they didn't stroke the engine and used magnum 302 casting heads. It made 400 hp without any power adders and 509 hp with nitrous. Imagine what kind of power you could make if you stroked a 318 to 390 and used some fancy ported aluminum heads with a bigger cam.

I would find it hard to believe that engine is even remotely streetable though.  Probably makes 6" vacuum.

I seem to recall a blown 318 in something late model that made something stupid like 840 HP....

For how long?

Why would you say that? There main goal was a streetable, relaible engine, and the specs on the cam aren't outrgeous, I'm running a much more aggressive cam in my 340 than they do in this 318 and have plenty of vaccuum.

I'd build it for maximum torque under 5000 rpm and let the horsepower fall where it may.
