basic 440, 516 iron heads, hyd cam, pump gas
« on: August 17, 2006 - 06:19:14 am »
Thought I'd add to this group. I'll also add estimated cost...
'74 440 block + .030 stock 3.75 stroke (446")
'66 516 casting closed chamber heads
Stock cast crank
Stock LY rods
Basic machine work was done on lower end by someone else, we bought it used. But, it has TRW forged flat tops, Federal bearings, stock replacement rings, etc. A basic rebuild with heavy pistons. Heads have 2.08/1.74 stainless performance valves. I pocket ported and cleaned them up, and gasket matched them, ending up around 245cfm @.550 intake, 175cfm @ .550 exh. Spring seats and guides cut for springs. They were also milled to get a true final compression of 10.5:1. Intake is a factory '70 iron 6bbl that was also port matched and cleaned up as best as I could reach, no plenum mods. Carbs are factory '70 six pack 4sp vaccum carbs, jetted and tuned. Cam is Crane hydraulic H-302-2, 302, .504 lift, 232 @ .050 intake, 312, .528 lift, 242 @ .050 exh. It runs 1 7/8 Hooker headers and MSD 6AL with a Pro Billet dist.
Chassis dyno results: 378hp @ 5300     470tq @ 3500
That's 435hp, 540tq when converted to flywheel output. This dyno is a little generous (maybe 3-4%) too, but you get the idea.
It idles at 850rpm with 9" of vaccum on 93 octane unleaded. The car is a '71 Cuda, 4406bbl/4sp/Dana car, shaker, add on AC, P/W, etc. the car was weighed and tips the scales (with driver) at 4100lbs. With 3.54s and the stick, it runs 14.0s at 108mph. (yeah, traction with radials is an issue..lol)
Cost to duplicate longblock: (minus intake and carbs) $5200.

what type of flywheel did you use for the cast crank? i have a 10-1/2 fly. and i hear the external balanced cast cranks require a different flywheel to be balanced right

Moper, if you're out there, is this my car?
Sounds very very similar, though I didnt think Sean was anywhere near that heavy!
Thanks.

PS
This is a pic I found of the car on Moparts from 2005 if you recognize it, and I think Sean is in the background behind the guy on the left. It still looks the same.

Tom,
Yes, that's your car. As much as I hate to admit it... that "thin" (cough...cough...) fellow in front of him is me...lol. That was a fun cruise. I built the 418 in the red Dart Dport too...lol. That was a few years ago.

Moper: I figured. Did you do any tuning on the 6 pak?
I ask because it apparently has huge jets in it, and was wondering where to go with that.
I get 6 mpg with it, and I drive it like a little old lady...
Not that I care that much about mileage...I put less than 50 miles a week on it (90 miles to the tank) but its gotta be symptomatic.
It seems to run ok, but it often smells like gas, probably unburned gas. The carbs are labeled "8.5" and "80", which if thats the jets, I'm told they are a lot bigger than they need to be.
Do you know anything about that?
Thanks.
Also, was that you that has 833 cores for sale?
