Title: Two 70s checking in
Post by: Relic on April 08, 2009 - 03:09:40 pm
Hey guys/gals, its Finn from dodgecharger.com

For those that haven't seen/heard, these are the 2 1970 challengers I picked up a couple weeks ago. After all the help I've received for my 68 charger on DC I know you guys are going to teach me a lot about these new projects. A bit of back story:
I was on lunch break from work when I spotted what I thought was an old mopar of some sort way back in the bushes. Naturally I flipped around and proceeded to drive back and forth along this road about eight times to confirm. Yes it was indeed a challenger although I couldn't tell the year. Anyway, I came back the next day with my video camera since it has the zoom and snapped a pic:
Once I uploaded it to the computer I saw the second challenger next to it. If you look close you can see the windshield frame and the R/T hood. At this point I knew I had to check it out. Next day I found what I guessed to be the house that owned lot they were on and knocked on the door. Asked if he owned the challengers sitting back there, he said no but he's keeping them for a friend that wants to sell them. Told me to go take a look and gave me the owners number. Also mentioned that one of them was in a movie but he couldn't remember the name of it. I walked through this long dirt/mud section, crossed a narrow bridge over a creek, kept walking, then pretty much shat bricks.
I saw they were both 1970s and they were both in much better condition then I expected. Next day I called the owner, he said he already had an offer of 10,000 for both of them. He was meeting with the guy today for lunch but if he didnt have the money they were both mine for 8500.
It was pretty much one of the longest days of my life.
He called back at 4:30 pm and said they were mine, get them out of there this weekend.

Ive been pretty busy with work so I havent had a chance to take more photos. These are from when we moved them...which took 16 hours I might add.

They're both ridiculously solid. The RT was in the move Natural Born Killer and yes the top is cut off. The engine was rebuilt recently and Im working on getting it started right now.
Last pic is of when it was being prepped for the movie.
The interior is all there on both but the coupe needs work whereas the RT needs cleaning. Also, there is SE stuff all over the RT's interior but Im not sure how to check this with the vin? *fender tags are missing but vins match body stampings*

Vin numbers:
Hardtop: JH23L0Bl86803

"Convertible": JS29N0El08805

I imcdb'd it and found this picture of the RT back in the day:

Im keeping them at a friend's house for now so I havent had a chance to get more detailed photos of them.
Im going to finish up my charger first, then the R/T, then the coupe.
Here are some recent pics of the charger for those that are interested:

Multi point fuel injection, 440/727, 3.23 sure grip, AirRide suspension...its my life/black hole in my wallet.
The challengers Id like to build for my parents as a kind of thank you for putting up with the mess the charger has created haha but we shall see.
*Sorry for the long winded intro*

Thanks guys!
I heard it was a really crap movie but Id still like to see it just for fun haha.
The coupe is probably going to be a vanishing point clone of sorts. I always liked how much of a rugged "sleeper" it was and my dad doesn't really care about appearance as long as there is a wild motor under the hood.
My mom loves the R/T as a convertible so if I can find a way to make that work I will. She's saying panther pink but it was an original sublime car (the coupe looks to be plum crazy) so we'll see.

Has anyone heard about taking a cut challenger and making it a convertible? Also, what were the structural differences between the two?

Very cool! How do you like Utah compared to here?
The challengers were actually just off the first exit you would pass on the 5 coming from Simi. Going south, you could probably pull off on the shoulder and see them down below.

Welcome to the site, Relic!  You really found an awesome deal between those two '70s!! :2thumbs:  That's amazing you now own the Natural Born Killers Challenger!!! :D  I will have to finally take the plunge and purchase the movie just so I can see what the car was like back when that video came out (I knew it was a crappy movie, but at least it's cheap and your Challenger debuted in it). ;)

Six-way seats...I'm very jealous! :faint:

Oh, and your Charger looks amazing, so it's good to see these two Challengers are in good hands now.

Good score on the Challengers! Diggin' the Charger for sure. What are the wheels on it? BTW...when watching Natural Born Killers just remember you're a car guy and it's all for a good cause. Otherwise the movie sucks.

I watched it the first time, thought it was OK.

Second time I watched for the car only.

Third time I could not make it all the way through, so I watched Vanishing Point for the billion-and-oneth time.

I always wondered what happened to the 'vert though, great find!

Title: Re: Two 70s checking in (The NBK RT is running!)
Post by: Relic on April 12, 2009 - 05:31:41 am
Thought Id update you guys; my friend and I got the RT running tonight!
After correcting some wiring issues, a carb rebuild, and add some gas it fired up like a champ! (by how much cotton like crap it blew out the entire exhaust must have been a mouse nest...) Sounded awesome too.
PLUS:
-The all the lights work except for brights (no toe clicker?) and the reverse light which wouldn't surprise me if its just the bulb.
-The clock worked
-The radio worked and sounded great (actually hooked it up to an ipod adapter too haha)
-It drove great*

great*= For all the 30 feet it moved until it became evident that the carb needs to be tuned a little more haha. Oh and the brakes jammed up. But hey success is success right?
Very fun.
My friend and I were so pumped we went out and got the movie. Couple things we noticed:
In the movie there appears to be an actual convertible top at least sitting in place if not hooked up and on the windshield frame there are the convertible clamp-in parts which mine does not have. ??? Also, I have SE trim on the door panels whereas in the movie they are wood grain. Other then that it is the spitting image of it. It has changed hands several times since the movie came out but those are odd modifications to make imo.
Im going to do more digging when I can because, other then those two things, its the spitting image of it. The guy I bought it from gave me paper work for the people that supposedly did the work on the car for the movie. Im going to see what I can track down on it.

Next task is getting the coupe fired up. Found some paper work on it for an alignment back in 96 so there's hope of getting that one going fairly easily too.

Just a little update: Got the hardtop running and driving. It is just waiting on new tires and there should be some videos. Right now the the only issue is the alternator is self exciting...which caused all the lights to promptly come on (good) only to promptly blow out every bulb (bad). Right now its just unplugged.
Found the broadcast sheet in good shape. Ill post that up later since I'm not sure how to read them yet.
Also, I had overlooked it before but it has a slapstick shifter and rear window defrost. Thought that was pretty sweet.

Welcome and a great find, I am speechless too....
As far as the area you found them, it must have been off the 126, In the 80's that area was call Castaic and I lived there for a few years and YES there were all kinds of cars hidden back in the bush back there in the 80's......

Hey guys, got a questions for you.
Ive got a lead on an RT/SE sunroof top in solid condition. The guy says its worth 3,000 but he'll sell it to me for 1500. There's no build sheet or fender tag for the "convertible" so there's no way to tell if it had a sunroof but I do know it's an RT/SE. A sunroof car would be pretty cool out here in California and the price seems reasonable considering its the only thing stopping it from being on the road more often (safety/body twisting concern). Thoughts?
 :feedback:

Come to think of it, was a sunroof even available on RT/SEs? I remember someone telling my there was an overhead console in the SEs.
Also, I have not seen this piece in person yet, just heard about it.

What a killer find. As it turns out, I am right down the road from you in Fillmore.

You know....the original 71 Cuda from the Phantasm movies is still somewhere in our area just waiting to be found. Last seen in Simi Valley a few years ago with a for sale sign on it.

Imagine how cool it would be to have two movie cars.

Bringing this thread back from the dead for an update and call for help!

As some know, the plum crazy challenger was sold several years. It was a hard call to make but ultimately it was brought back on the road with a modern hemi swap.

The movie car (RT/SE) has been 95% restored, just awaiting the  headliner and overhead console to go in, then the hood stripe and its done!

My question is, does anyone know a place in Southern California that has installed a RT/SE headliner before? I understand it is a tricky process and would rather not mess it up.

Thanks all, Ill try to get more photos up soon!
