Title: Rare Challenger 71 Conv 4 gear
Post by: Challenger_7 on May 23, 2006 - 09:01:39 am
Hi all.
This site was indicated to me by a member in the "Dodge Forum". I am new here and new to muscle cars too. I collect classic cars but this is my firestreal muscle. I live in Lebanon and just found and bought this beauty. I know very little about it but have learned a lot since the last 3 weeks (thats when I bought the car). It is a rare 71 convertible, 383 Magnum 4 manual gears.
Much has been done to the car by the past owners, and I am trying to learn as much as I can in order to put the car in its best original form. Imagine, the previous owner had changed its gear with that of a charger automatic. Fortunately, he still had the car and agreed to swap back. The change has already been done, and what a difference.
Please help me by directing me to photos, sources of info and parts suppliers, otherwise can I just shoot my many questions to this forum? If yes, where exactly would be the pest place in this forum to ask questions.
Thanks all. Here is a photo.

We're glad to have you on board!!

I think so...  I don't think it's Lebanon, NH in the USA.

Interesting, look at the antenna.  It's on the right rear quarter panel, like the export models.

The letters across the hood look like '72-'74 models.  Bumper looks like '73-'74 models.
Were these export items?

Hey guys, thank you so much for your heart warming welcome. You are even better than what I was told you would be like. I appreciate all your comments and indeed you have lightened my heart.
Yes I am from Lebanon, Middle East (where, unfortunately, all the action is these days >:().
The car, as I had previously mentioned has undergone quite a few transformations, including "Recaro" seats and steering wheel. The previous owner has painted - literally - everything inside in red, a horrible sight to look at. The seats look good but the rest of the inside does not.
Yes the bumper, hood and so many things, I have no clue what they are supposed to look like, and that is why I need information fom you experts.
One source confirmed that only 41 were known to have been shipped, but how many were actually produced? Any idea? Vin is definately 71.
As I also mentioned in my previous post, I have completed the change over to its original 4speed gear, but recently discovered that the engine was also swapped with a 400? The owner before the previous one, whom I hunted down and was able to locate, confirmed that he has the original 383 Magnum. He promised to gather all its parts and pass it on to me. How can I confirm that? What should I look for?
Ok, as suggested by "Rev it up", I will post more questions in the tech section, and hope to meet you all there.
By the way, you all have awsome, mouth dripping, gorgeous cars. :droolingbounce: Glad to make your aquaintance. Some more photos (one is of me next to another muscle I found and bought yesterday, 71 Trans Am 455HO).

OOooooo...I have a soft spot in my heart for for the early '70s Trans Ams!  Nice find!  Even with the original striping!

Now that's a lot of red!  :grinyes:  Do you have the broadcast sheet for your challenger?  Do you have a fender tag?  That will help you know what you need to do to return it to original. If you need help decoding it, you can post it here and we can help you decipher it.  Here is a thread where we have compiled a list of websites to companies that you might need in the future for parts.  http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=17112.0

Oop...my bad...the antenna's in the regular spot.  :-[  Looked like rear quarter in the first pic.

Sorry, I will always reply the next day as I am GMT + 2.
Yes I know, tons of red!!! He even painted the Hurst gear handle in red before swapping the gearbox. Lady, your car is fantastic and so is your website
Thanks for all the indicated links. I will check them one by one.
I do not have anything other than the VIN. Is there any hope of getting to the roots of my car's origin??
I have posted some questions in the tech section and already answers are coming in. You guys are a great bunch.
Glad you like the Trans Am. I am being promised an SD !!  :naughty: Still have not seen it yet.

In the Pontiac world that's like a Hemi!

Hi, Farouk. I see you made it here! I will take credit for sending him here, since you folks are much more knowledgeable on the finer points of E-bodies than I am. I knew he should sign up here and ask away, as the DF crowd is more geared to modern iron, and I knew he could get the info he needed here. Even though I'm mainly a 'B' guy, they still let me hang around! ;)

Hi there. Hope you had a good week end.
When you say that, do you mean from rarity point of view or power-performance.
I have not seen the car yet, but I am still chacing a contact who claims that he knows someone with such a car. I am praying all the time.
On the other hand, I am equally being promised yet another 1971 conv 383 magnum that is still absolutely original with very low mileage. That would be an opportunity of a lifetime to find 2 out of 41 exported. I will also have the opportunity of comparing notes with the one I have that has been changed quite a bit. Olease pray for me too, that I do find these cars

Hi T J. Yes I did what you recommended and I am already being overwhelmed by the great attitude and valuable information.
I am just a bit too busy these past few days that I am not being able to consentrate on their answers (and yours) in order to make something out.

I promise to catch up soon. Please see my questions and answers in the tech section, which is where I was directed to.
Thanks a bunch buddy.

Sort of both in my opinion but it definately didn't have the power of the Hemi.  Mopar and Pontiac worlds are a wee bit different.

Given that this engine was introduced post 1972 when most if not all manufacturers were down sizing engine size and horsepower, the SD 455 was a great engine in the time of emissions, decreased power, and performance.

Here's a quote from http://www.musclecarclub.com/musclecars/pontiac-firebird/pontiac-firebird-history-2.shtml

"Comments: 1973 saw some significant new changes to the Firebird, including a new eggcrate grille and a revised front bumper. Engine ratings were down again, with the 350 rated at a mere 150 bhp and the 400 at 250 bhp. But two things would save the Firebird and firmly establish Pontiac as the performance manufacturer during the dark days of the 1970s. The first was the introduction of a new Super Duty 455 V8 (SD-455). "Super Duty" was the name Pontiac used on its high performance (i.e. race ready) engines in the early 1960's, and the Super Duty 455 was a street legal race prepped engine. All SD-455's were hand assembled, and had a reinforced block, special cam shaft, aluminum pistons, oversize valves and header-like exhaust manifolds. Pontiac rated the SD-455 engines at a stout 310 bhp and 390 lb-ft, but experts agreed that it was closer to 370 bhp. This level of engine ratings were unheard of in an era when other manufacturer's engines' output were falling dramatically, and the Firebird became the only true performance car remaining in the market. Unfortunately, Super Duty engines were expensive and therefore rare; only 252 Trans Am's and 43 Formula 455's received the SD-455 engine. The second major coup for the Firebird was the introduction of a new Firebird decal on the Trans Am, which covered almost the entire hood and was quickly nick-named "the screaming chicken," which added to the excitement and popularity of the entire Firebird lineup. Sales of the Firebird and Trans Am were up dramatically, ensuring their survival.

Production: Formula: 10,166 Trans Am: 4,802
Engines: 350 V8 150 bhp. 400 V8 230 bhp @ 4400rpm, 325 lb-ft @ 3200 rpm. 455 V8 250 bhp @ 4000 rpm, 370 lb-ft @ 2800 rpm. 455 (SD) V8 310 bhp @ 4000 rpm, 390 lb-ft @ 3600 rpm.
Performance: N/A"

Thank you buddy. You seem to be into a wonderful project, and I am impressed that you are so young!!!

I have just found and bought another '71 R/T 383 Magnum and you are giving me a good idea of how to go about restoring it. It has much rust, although in small bits here and there.
By the way, I am asking this question to everyone, do you knwo of a good on-line parts dealer for the Challenger. I need a few parts to make both cars look good.

Thank you friends for your welcome and guidance notes.

Rev, I just saw the thread relating to the suppliers addresses. Wow, thanks a bunch to you and to all the members who added to it. I have copied all the addresses, and will be exploring them one by one!

Hemi71 Awsome car you have. Actually none of my cars have a fender tag. These painters in this part of the world have no respect for them, and as the cars get painted, they discard the tags :pullinghair: What I still have is the tag on the R/T door (see photo), other than the vin numbers on both cars. What does the s (special) stand for. Is it for the cloth seats? (Photos in the tech section "Interior and gauges" under "Originality of 71 Conv Challenger"
Also, what is the meaning of 6-71 above the vin code?
Interestingly enough, both cars come from the same plant and the same 383 4bbl engines.

360Cuda Thanks, you too have a great taste! I have just been shown a 71 cuda that needs a home and tons of restoration. Will keep you posted

Regards, Farouk

Thank you for asking. I am actually in Beirut and we had our good share of bombing. A bridge under construction (???) was bombed and I had 2 newly acquired cars parked nearby (72 firebird and 72 charger) :swear:. They both got some damage but nothing that cannot be fixed.
The Firebird had some damage to the paint and front windshield broken. The Charger, all windows broken, the roof caved in and the boot also caved in near the rear window. You can see in the photo of the firebird the section of the bridge that was knocked down. If they had knocked down a section closer, they would have been totalled out!!
I also had 2 rockets fall 100 feet away from me, but other than a rush of adrenaline :scared:, nothing!
Thanks again for your concern. See attached photos.

Thank you ESGEE. For now, there is a cease fire and we are all trying to go back to normal life.
I have taken my conv out of hiding and will be giving it a fresh paint, and hope that by the time it is almost ready, postal services would have resumed and I can order some needed cosmetics for it.

Cheers

Thank you all for your good votes.
Yes things are settling down, and my car painter is sorting his generator out to be able to start working on my vert, as in his area power may still take quite a while to be restored.
Dave, thank you too for the direction for finding the build sheet. I will go there.
I am not in the service, have been all my life living outside Lebanon, partially retired now and back here for the past 5 years. Now I must say I have been welcomed with a big bang !!!!
The Charger is one of 8 cars I have recently acquired, and will restore it to sell, not to keep. As I am finding good deals here and there, I am buying them, restoring them and selling them and keeping only cars of interest to me. Hopefully this way I may end up owning the cars I like at no, or little investment :money:
By the way friends, when I start the paint job, where do I go to do the post and report?
