Title: Not new here but got a new car. Go Mango 70 Challenger
Post by: Cudaragtop on April 08, 2018 - 12:31:04 am
Drove to CA to pick this up on 3/24
Dylan and I left our house at 5:30 AM on Saturday, got to our Hotel near Vallejo around 7:00 PM
Arrived to look at the car at 10:00 AM Sunday, Had it on the trailer and headed home around 1:30 PM and pulled up at home on Monday at 5:30 AM, exactly 48 hours after leaving for CA Saturday.
318, 904 AT Bucket seat console Rallye Dash, V5X (Side Molding Black) V1W (Vinyl Roof White), H6K4 Burnt Orange Seats, EK2 Go Mango Orange Paint, 6 Way Manual Driver's seat, new front suspension, new Wilwood front disc brakes, new dual exhaust, Seat Covers, Roof Skin, Vinyl Top, Carpet, Bodywork and paint is less than 2 years old.
Body and paint look outstanding. The original owner was restoring the car but did not finish before he passed away leaving it to his sister. A year and a half later she decided it was time to get her garage back and now it's mine. Wasn't looking but a professional aquaintense call me and told me about the car and the person selling it happened to work for the same company as me. He was helping the owner sell it. The Stars were aligned. The timing worked out.
Going to fix a few things, drive and enjoy it for a while and then we'll see...

Need a 4 post lift so I can park the Cuda and Challenger in the same bay and give Mama her spot back...

Nice score! Looks like it might have A05 protection group...  Pretty rare steering wheel too..

It looks awesome. My Challenger was originally EK2 but I changed it to EV2, I have thought about that many times. Nice addition.

Nice score! Looks like it might have A05 protection group...  Pretty rare steering wheel too..

What would be included in that?
It has V5X side molding, Front Bumperettes with rubber pads and the rear bumper rubber pads?

floor mats, hood pad, bumper guards frt & rear with pads & the side moulding with rubber insert... Also the chrome door edge moldings but they were normally just in the package in the trunk...

Cool, unfortunately there is no fender tag or build sheet. Over a hundred pictures going back to the 70's but that's it.
I have not taken anything apart to look for the BS yet. Looked under the driver and passenger seats with my camera in my phone. Just see nice springs and new burlap. Fear that they reupholstered and just tossed the BS with the old seat fabric...
There are also pictures of the original back seat out and they do not show a BS in the bottom or the back.

Randy - I just realized this was your thread.... I see you are diving in to the hobby full on..  Great score on the car, I suspect it wasn't all that cheap, hopefully not too bad. What are your plans for the car?

Well Mike, Just could not pass it up.
First I'm going to enjoy it for awhile at least  while fixing a few of the things that bug me...   :working:
Paint the engine the correct Blue and get rid of that Ferd Blue  :puke:
Or should I dress it like a 340 and paint it orange? Hmmm???  :dunno: :clueless: :drunk: ... Keep it stock! Nah spice it up. Keep it stock... just clean it up.
I'll start with just cleaning it up.  No need to dump a bunch of money into it. I have 2 other cars to do that with.  :money:  :money:
Engine compartment and Trunk could use a little TLC.
A little help here and there to get the rest of the car up to the level of the really nice exterior.
Dash Pad, Kick panels, console, dash frame, steering column all need some clean up and paint.
Would like some tunes but not sure if I want to go full on aftermarket or go for the "Stock" look sleeper hidden tunes.
All easy stuff that is more time than $$
Wifey says I can keep it! She likes it too! Need to get a 4 post storage lift so I can stack my E-Bodies.  :2thumbs:
Looked at BendPak but don't want to have to supply it with Air...
This one would fit nicely in the bay where I park the Cuda.

That's the great thing about living in America, you can do what you want with it. If it where me, I'd definitely spice it up if for no other reason than to make me happy.Id probably paint the engine hemi orange, but maybe not. I would seriously consider putting a TA hood on it as I never liked the flat hoods. Basically I wouldn't do anything that was permanent but at the same time make it mine.

Great buy, should be a lot of fun.

Great minds...
T/A Hood and Hemi Orange engine paint are a couple things that I been thinking about.  :2thumbs:
I bought 2 cans of 70 318 Blue but Hemi Orange is still a possibility. I already had the Orange.

Looks perfect to me! That's definitely where I would be headed. Looks like a sleeper. There is a picture floating around of the prototype TA, the picture is BW but doesn't have the TA side stripe, I always loved that picture and the car. It had a butt stripe (bumble be) which I am not a real fan of, but other than that, the car is bad!!

Pulled the console out, disassembled, and put a couple coats on.
Raining outside so drying in the living room.
Turns out Duplicolor Filler Primer FP102 is a very close match to the original Burnt Orange.
The bottom piece of the console door I left original natural just cleaned.

Should I put satin clear on to give a little shine? Just don't want it to be too shiny.
Flat does hide the imperfections a little better...  :dunno:

Received new AMD Bumpers, Bumper Bolts, Metro Front Bumper Filler Ends, Rear Bumper Guards, Rear Bumper Rubber pads,

Inner Gas cap for under flip top, Trunk Lid Rubber Bumpers, Sill Plates, Dash Speaker Grill, Fuel Filler Neck to trunk seal.

Scored another 1970 WA State License Plate, XYZ 123, May put it on the 'Cuda when it's time to renew. It has "70-CUDA" personalized plates now but I'm getting tired of paying to license it every year and paying extra for the personalized plate.

test fire the satin clear on the backside of the lid (the part that gets hidden when assembled) and see how it looks. You can always respray if needed. Looks pretty good overall though.

Randy - you have been busy... looks really good. Are you going to put an overlay on the instrument cluster? I put one on my 70 Challenger and it really changes the way it looks.

Just drove my 70 last night, I cannot believe how much better it starts and runs with the EFI.

That's awesome Mike. I love that 6-pack setup!
Would love the 340 6-barrel version for my Cuda. Oh wait, you have that too on your Cuda.     :burnout:

Where did you get your overlay? Is it a Walnut grain vinyl decal? Would like to avoid the cost of the replacement.
Thought I might try to use some touch up on the scratches... Part of the problem is that there is hard black bed liner type overspray on it. Ugh! Mainly on the switch panel though.

Yeah that EFI system is so much better than the carbs its hard to comprehend; fires right up, goes to a nice idle, crisp throttle response, etc. On top of all that the engine is behaving like a 440 should; trying to spin the tires off the rims...  which is directly attributable to the computer and finite control of the AF mixture and timing.

I have bought several overlays, the one I have on my Challenger is from Detroit Muscle. I called him and he is exceptionally knowledgeable about this subject, he says for 70-71 the grain is "Kashmir" (aka Teak) and that Walnut is for 72-74. His overlays are very well done and once installed hard to tell they are even there.

https://www.detroitmuscletechnologies.com/woodgrain-carbon-fiber-overlays/ (https://www.detroitmuscletechnologies.com/woodgrain-carbon-fiber-overlays/)

I also have an overlay that I bought from PG Classic (I think) but I haven't use it yet (not sure I will). Its ok but not as nice as Detroit's.

Thanks Mike!
Ordered from their E-Bay store.
Same price as their web store but free shipping and faster checkout.  :burnout:
Maybe I'll get one for the Cuda too... the original isn't as bad as the Challengers though.

No worries Randy, I think you will really like the results. It can be a little intimidating to do, but if you research it and think it through it will be fine. I used a lot of windex and a squeegee to get it positioned correctly.

Nice work, looks factory.
Thanks Mike.
A number of aftermarket items from the PO but I'm okay with clean even if not actually "Correct".
I set a budget limit and trying to stay within it. Pretty happy with how well it's turning out so far.
Will probably end up selling eventually but look forward to enjoying for a while maybe longer.

That was the reason for buying it... But it's such a nice car I may end up keeping it. My problem is limited garage parking.
Really need to move to some property with a shop.
Don't want to leave it outside but going to have to give wifey her spot in the garage back this fall/winter.
A lift is needed so the Cuda and Challenger can stack in the Cuda bay. Not ideal but will do for a while.
Really need to be able to park 4 cars inside but can only fit 2 in our 3 car garage now. Will raise that up to 3 with a lift.
I just sold the rotisserie so that $$ can go towards a 4 post storage lift.

Next house number 1 requirement for me is a 40'x60' shop. I'll take the lift with me.

I just found this thread. Very nice.  What is the A/C system you are running?  My Cuda came with a factory system but I'm thinking that I can do better even though I restored the heater box.

Thanks! The PO added Vintage Air to a Non-AC car, I'm definitely keeping it! It blew cold before I took it apart.

Cowl Blacked out.
Scuff, Clean, Tape, Mask,   Spray, Clean up... Work on refinishing the grill tomorrow.

Have a new rear harness to run too. Old one had several brittle and or bare wires, multiple spliced and hacked wires and the wrap was disintigrating where it was still remaining. Plus all the black bed liner overspray on it.
Going to have the rear brakes done and Front End Alignment done on Thursday.

Now I  noticed that the Dome light comes one when I press the Brake pedal...
The front side marker lights don't light...
I'm guessing that the front marker bulbs a burnt out and grounding is amiss...
Noticed that the M&H rear light harness has a ground tab on each of the tail and reverse sockets. Going to add a short ground wire to each to bond to the mounting studs. Pull the front marker housings and check the bulbs.
Also the Map light switch only turns the map light on if the door is open...  :clueless: :dunno: sheesh  :banghead: :pullinghair:
Would rather paint the grill. :2thumbs:

Thanks Mike.
I certainly have mixed feelings... thinking I would love to keep it and also that I really need to sell it...

I know the feeling all too well. I have a super hard time selling pretty much anything; stems from growing up scratching and fighting for anything. I thought about selling off most or all of my old cars and buying something like a used Hellcat, however as I thought it through I arrived at the fact that I already have a 2010 Challenger RT (not a Hellcat obviously but representative of the breed), I grew up loving the old cars, and that once I sold them I would never be able to replace them and I knew that I would want to. In other words, new Challengers will be available for quite a lot of time in the future whereas the old cars won't be.

We all have to do what we have to do. If its not a financial burden its worth keeping IMO.
