Title: 1st time...Any recommendations?
Post by: highspeeddirt on June 11, 2008 - 10:52:26 pm
Well, this will be my first time to carlisle and I'm bringing the whole family which consists of the wife and I, and 3 girls... 12, 5, and 3. (possibly the 17 year old daughter to make all 4)  Anyway, seeing that I'll be 1100 miles from home and not able to "run to the house" is there any suggestions ya'll have for me as in what to bring, what to expect, anything special since I'll have all the little ones? Is there much for kids to do except getting tired of me telling them WHOA! Don't  touch that! ......lol  Also, is there anything that needs contributed in the tent that I might be of assistance with?  I'm looking foward to meeting everyone.  Thanks!                   HSD

Here is the web link for their site listing kids activities.

this should buy you some free time during the show

Try to plan some time at another place for the kids.  In the past couple years we did hershey park.  This year we are doing Shaker village or something like that.  I have 2 boys 3+5 and a 1yo girl.  Should be another interesting trip to say the least.  Oh and a wagon is good to trailer the kids around in so they don't get tired and start complaining about all the walking.LOL

For the show itself, comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen and / or brimmed hats for all.

Hershy Park for the ladies for sure, all ladies like chocolate, regardless of age.

There are cave tours and other cool things to do as well, most local hotels have brochures on things to see and do that are close by.

Good call on Hershy Park for the family!!!  I went after last years show we had fun!!!  That would be a great idea for the family if they are not into the car show.

As far as the show it self I always like the rare Mopars so I it the Red Barn up its my favroite along with the high end car sale under the pavilion, there are alot of cool rare cars there for sale.  Those are just two of MANY areas that are just awesome at that show.  I wish that show lasted all summer!!!

If you are driving, bring some folding chairs if you have room, so you'll have a place to sit under our tent.

There's also the Gettysburg battlefields, Boyd's Bears in Gettysburg, Michaux State Forrest for hiking/biking, Auto Museum in Hershey, Dutch Wonderland, Amish & Mennonites in Newburg & Shippensburg, Go-Karts in Carlisle, Cluggy's in Chambersburg, etc.

Make sure the motel you stay at has a pool, cuz the wife & kids will probably get bored real quick at the show.  My teenage daughter loves Mopars, but 2 hrs in the sun at Carlisle were enough for her.  We also did Gettysburg & Hershey Park before Carlisle.

"Our" Hotel does have a pool, but it definitely ISN'T Olympic sized.

DEFINITELY bring chairs, bring lots of drinks and water, and snacks too for the kids 'cause food prices at Carlisle are extreme.

Hershey Park isn't a bad idea, there's also a lot of stores and malls in Mechanicsburg and Camp Hill, east of Carlisle (out by the group hotel.)  There's a big WalMart east on Route 11 in Mechanicsburg, so if you can't fit everything you need in the car, you can pick up essentials when you get there.

Definitely encourage the kids to bring books, gameboys (if they're into that) or whatever - for those not interested in hiking for miles to look at cars, they can get bored very quickly.  Just ask this kid!

Thanks for all the recommendations everyone!  The wife has been checking out several things online from Hershey park all the way to checking out the statue of Liberty after carlisle. She's thinking what most of you have been saying about them getting bored after awhile.  Therefore she's looking for stuff they could maybe do while I'm at the show one day.  (barring I might hitch a ride with someone to the show and back that day :)      Another question I meant to ask was, is there much going on sunday, and how late does sunday usually last?  I appreciate everyones input very much, and looking foward to next month!                                     HSD

On Friday and Saturday nights the movie Christine and a current movie will be showing at Cumberland Drive-In.

I usually stay until after the "giveway" car is awarded on Sunday. Once that is over there is a major exedus.

That said, anyone leaving earlier than that MUST give me their tickets to the giveway car from their goody bag before they leave. I call dibs.  :ylsuper:

Wow, Wife with kids?  I say have a 2nd car so that when they get bored, they can go shopping or back to the hotel. The hotel is quite a few miles away too. The Mopar lovers here, mainly guys and some girls, can stay there all day at the swap, look at cars, sit at the tent and BS, but usually other family members are going to be saying, "how long before we go?"  Then we do the same thing the next day too.     I say promise them a "REAL" vacation and leave them at home for your Carlisle week-end vacation, Unless you are ready to not spend lots of time at the event.     I went by myself last year and the only thing better would have been having a buddy or my son along, but I had a blast by myself. I stayed till  was ready to leave, I walked the swap meet till I felt that I was done, etc.   You'll get the picture.........

Good luck with that., Let us know how it turns out.
