Title: Challenger T/A hood

When I see a nicely painted car with a flat black hood whether it is organosol or primer, it reminds me of a car that was never finished. I like AARs and T/As regardless because in their case it makes the e-body look like it is intended for racing. The organosol hood and spoiler paint make it seem like they were added in haste to get the car race ready. I came across this red 1970 T/A with a body-color matched hood and kinda like it. It seems more formally dressed for the Academy Awards than at the podium to receive an award at a race event. There were a lot of factory cars that came with body-colored hood scoops: 55-57 T-Birds,65-67 GTO,66 Ford Fairlane 427,67-68 GT500, 67 Pontiac Firebird 400 with functional ram air twin hood scoops, 68 GTO with ram-air hood scoops, 69 AMC SC/Rambler, 1969 Ford Boss Mustang 429,69 Mercury Cougar Elimator, 69 Hurst Olds 455,69 Pontiac Trans AM, 70 AMC AMX, 70 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 W-30,70 GTO Judge with functional hood scoops, 1971 Buick GS 455, to name a few. So on a Challenger T/A is it a   :scared: or   :woohoo: or  :dunno:

I've always hated shiny paint on T/A-AAR-A12 hoods.... Organisol all the way....

The reason for the flat black hood -- for competition racing purposes -- was to prevent glare.

Mopar Mitch: Thanks for the logical explanation. This logic begs the question: Why didn't Dan Gurney #48 and Sweede Savage #42 AAR Cudas have flat black hoods?

Realistically, the Posey Challengers 77+76 and the Gurney AARs didn't have their hoods painted black either... probably for marketing reasons... but those cars were factory-prepped early-on before the mass sales (few that they truly were) began for the "street" AARs and T/As.  I've read it in the past as to the reason for the flat black hoods.... sounded good and logical.   Painting a T/A hood and finishing it properly (such as under the scoop) would have been time consuming and rather difficult (AAR hood easier); also, the flexing of the fiberglass would only eventually display stress cracks in any paint (as well as on the flat black... which they all eventually do).. so, perhaps, another reason why MaMopar chose not to paint the hoods the body color.

When Sid Rust purchased one of the Gurney AARs and eventually ran it in the midwest GT-1 race events, he re-painted the 'Cuda a beautiful silver color (ala... silver B'Cuda fish color!) and painted the fiberglass hood and fender tops flat black, respectively... looked really cool!

Do you have the intake portion that seals the air cleaner to the hood? Have a 440 with a fast efi and t/a hood but looking for a six pack style air box for a four barrel.

IMO black looks far better than painted; when they are painted it, they look over done.

The AAR and T/A  stand out over the other models you mentioned..exactly it makes the e-body's look like it is intended for racing.  The other models had scoops of all functions with striped hoods.  GOI.

Had several trucks with running boards, my '36 Roadster has them. Never seen them on a Camaro 'til now.  :roflsmiley:

It doesn't look like a T/A with the hood painted the same color as the rest of the car.
