Title: Was my CUDA the last one made... ??
Post by: lastCUDA on June 23, 2005 - 10:21:00 AM
BS23L4B336441

I ordered it during the gas shortage in spring of 1974.
A few weeks went by & the salesman called me to tell me that
they quit making CUDAs, & to come back for my deposit.
A few days later he calls back & asks me if I want one made, as they
have enough parts left to make the one I ordered. He said it would be
missing a few items, but that once the car came in, they would see what
was missing & order them thru the parts department. It came in the way
that I ordered it, & missing little things like the dome light cover, ashtray ect.

Thanks,
Dave

Very interesting.  Some more details on the car??  I just sold a 360 auto that was 293832 built 2/01 and still have a numbers 360 4 speed that is 294836.  If not the last, I would certainly say close to it.

I ordered it Black with a white interior, 4speed, $3,600 to have it built my way
Hay, it was my 1st new car, & I loved Black ,
but thought if I ordered it with a white interior, I would be forced to be careful,
to not get it dirty. HAHA, it was a pain to keep clean.

No, I was cleaning out an old box today & found the fender tag. I had removed the tag when I had the car repainted true blue B5, the same color as a 1971 HEMICUDA 4speed with leather car I once owned too. I ran into the guy that has the 1974 maybe 5 years ago & at that time he told me that it was probaby the last one made. I would like to give him this fender tag if anyone knows him ??
Now the 1971 HEMICUDA I got in early 1977 for $5,000, I sold to a racing buddy, Roy Crownover, from Latrobe PA, in late 1977 for $8,000. It is a B5 true blue 4 speed shaker car, with black leather. Speedo was disconnected at 426 miles.I have'nt seen it since 1977, & I heard that Roy hasn't moved it from his garage since I sold it to him. Yes, he knows what it's worth,  as a year or two after I sold it to him, I heard he was offered $125,000 for it. It's probaby a million dollar car today.

Would you consider selling it to get a "more desirable" car (or three)?  :dontknow:  :D

You mean would he, Roy Crownover, be willing to sell it ??
I wouldn't know.
Try a search for him in Latrobe PA. Maybe you'll get lucky ?

NO one would offer anyone 125k for a hemi cuda in 1979, Im met a guy in phoenix with a 70 hemi challenger convertible they paid 12,500 for the car in 78 or 79 and he said they over paid.  you probably got a very good price for it in 77, remember it was just an 8 year old used car.

Restored its worth more than that today, million dollars   I doubt that maybe 1/4 million or 300k. maybe

there is a guy from Alaska with a registry who might put your name on a list if the owner comes up, or try govier. or another registry

It was the year the market went nuts, the 1st time, 1979 or 1980 ??
Car has less than 500 miles on it. The 2nd owner Bob Jones of Pittsburgh, & me the 3rd owner, never had the car on the street & always in a garage. When I sold it to Roy, the 4th & present owner, it was as clean, if not cleaner looking than new. I had heard that Roy never takes it out of the garage either ??

Great car, great story.

The first time the muscle car market really went nuts was 1989-1990.  That was probably the first time you saw Hemi cars go to $100,000+.  The market cooled in the early 90s then took off again.

The March 13 build date sounds a little early for end of production, but maybe with gas prices and availability the way it was then.  I'd think someone on the board should know about when '74 production ended.

There's more....
Two months after I took delivery of the 1974 There was an ad in the paper for a 1970 HEMICUDA for $1,995. I bought it. He thought the motor was toast & sold it real quick to me, as I was the 1st one to answer his ad. Wrong plugs in it,  & thermostat wouldn't open, so it would overheat real fast. A steal for $1,995.  A short time later, the state of PA said everycar had to be insured. I could only afford to insure one car. So, I kept the best of both, I swap drivetrains. Yes I did, I put the HEMI, automatic trans, 4.10 dana & the shaker hood into the 1974 & kept it. The 1970 HEMICUDA 3 on the tree with bench seat got the 360, 4speed, 3.55 rear. Had to weld in a shifter tunnel & swap out all the petals. What I pain, when your young & dumb... I sold the 70' to a friend. So, I had myself a 1974 black HEMICUDA with an orange shaker hood. I even took it in under factory warranty to have a bad window cranking part replaced. The dealer was Tom Myl Plymouth in Pittsburgh where I bought my 74'. Tom Myl raced a 70'  SS/DA HEMICUDA at that time & somehow he had a spare AAR hood, so... I ditched the heavy shaker hood setup for the lightlight AAR hood. Like I said before, young & dumb... The 70' HEMICUDA body years later landed in Erie, PA & the new owner was restoring it, He tracked me down, & I still had the automatic with the correct numbers stamped on it. Trans was wornout, put he was happy as can be to get the case.

Your old Cuda BS23L4B336441 was owned by Dave McElrath of Pittsburg PA back in 1982 and 1983. I do not know if he still has it, does the name sound familiar? Are you Dave maybe? If so your birthday is just over a month away.

It did have a Hemi and a Dana in it at the time.

As far as being the last Cuda made, no, it was not. The highest 1974 Cuda VIN that I have on file so far ends in 354897.

Barry

WoW,
That's me, & my birthday is one month away...
So, the guy I sold the 74' too was wrong, close but no cigar.
Maybe it was the last 'ordered-to-customer-specs' car ??
Is there a 'date' that, is known to be the last 'E' body down the line, in any of the books out there ?

Dave

Post by: lastCUDA on June 24, 2005 - 07:10:15 AM
OK,
I did a little searching & found out that I sold the 74' to Wayne Bender in Leechburg, PA. I found an old time-slip with his name & plate # on it. His PA plate is 'CUUUUDA'.I'm going to send this 74' fender tag to him, I bet he'll be happy.
I had one other cool 'E' body. I bought a 1970 black on black HEMI Challenger automatic with a cracked-up motor due to pure H2O left in the HEMI in the winter. Harold Delastine of Washington, PA  bought it from me in the late 70's.  He put it back together & took 1st place at the 1st local show he went to back in the early 80's. I belive  too that it has been sitting in a garage the past 25 years.

Hey Dave,
Very cool. Do you remember joining SIAC? That is how I knew about your '74. Another former SIAC member by the name of Tom Quadrini saved the original membership forms from being tossed out. He let Jeff Bangert borrow them to make copies and Jeff passed them on to me. Since then, I have been able to mail out close to 300 of them to the current owners of the cars, so it has helped a lot of people with their prior owner histories.

There are a lot of them still waiting to be claimed as well, you can view the lists in the "found" section of www.hamtramck-historical.com .

Happy early birthday.

Headway989, post or email the VIN to me and I will check my files for you. Anything I have is free to the owner of the car with proof of ownership.

T/Ake care,
Barry Washington

Wow, I found this thread to be quite interesting. :o  It's pretty cool what you can find out via the Internet about your previous car owners, not to mention it's pretty darn cool people like Barry and Jeff take the time to help other enthusiasts track down all their cars original documentation.  LastCuda, if I haven't said this before, welcome to the board and that history line you posted is unreal!

The OP got me curious and I took a quick glance at my tag:  321 and 348928

It's a '74 Cuda 360 4-spd in Deep Sherwood and a Canandian car.   :canada:

I didn't know that they stopped making Cuda's before the year ended.  Interesting.  Probably why they only made 398 of these 360 4-spd Cuda's.

I'm now curious as to the last production date of the Cuda.

My 74 Barracuda is 354685 - built March of 74, close to the end of production.  I believe this topic has come up for discussion before and there were some cars built in April and maybe May?

The last cuda/barracuda has not been determined but I seem to remember an article in one of the mopar magazines about the last 74 Challenger.

My brother ended up buying the house next to the first owner.
There was a third black 360 4 speed car in the area back then too.
Bob Miller from Castle Shannon.
I just put new Dougs ceramic headers on.
Working on front end now (new control arms, ball joints, tie rod ends, etc ).
Should hit the streets this spring.

O.K. this IS a small world we live in. I know Wayne Bender and a little about the 74 Cuda he has. Somewhere along the way someone started trying to clone a 70 out of the 74. They also cut a hole in the roof for an aftermarket sunroof. He is still trying to correct a few of the cars issues and hope to have it back on the road soon.

WOW!!! 10 year old post and the car is still owned by Wayne. Just talked to him this morning.

I graduated from KO in 77 ..

Had the '64 Rambler Classic and 71 Matador wagon to drive back then.

Actually i still actively look for either of those rides to buy.

My 73 Barracuda vapor locked a month or so ago and while trying to get it started , a guy stopped and helped , found out he had recently purchased a nice '64 Rambler Classic.

I owned a '74 back in '81-'84, was a 318 auto car, my dad and grandfather paid $1500 for it, I remember I was so excited i could not sleep for days looking outside my window at it all night..haha after a few year's I restored it removed the white stripes and spent the whole summer doing body work thanks to a master tech neighbor that helped me paint it with Centauri enamel paint I recall.
I got a '70 340 engine for $90 all rebuilt, somebody welded the cam cup for the fuel pump and it rubbed the timing cover so the guy must have freaked out removed it and that's where i came in and bought it, tore it down in my basement and found the problem, got a free 727 small block torqueflite built by Fairbanks transmission It had yellow paint with black zebra stripe's, had a blown one way clutch in the bottom of case, my first auto trans rebuild.
Got a 4.10 sure grip for $50 and that car flew, sold it for $2100 in 'early '84 to a local kid in Windsor Ct, i have no documentation on the vin or build date today........have missed that car for many year's

This might help.. Your car is a TX9/TX9/A6XW D21 car.. I have an old SIAC membership form with prior owner info. And as you can see I have info on the car right after yours and several others.

JH23G4B364745
JH23L4B373131
JH23G4B375355
JH23G4B397584

These are from old SIAC membership forms and not an exact list. Some I have fender tag info for some don't. I highly doubt Galen has any info other than people who had theirs decoded on the later cars as there was no money to be made from them. I didnt read all the posts so I dont know if Barry beat me to the punch and messaged you.  ;)

I read a article in Hot Rod that claimed the last Barracuda rolled down the Hamtramk line on April 1, 1974. To an Aprils Fools celebration at the lines end.
Mine was ordered and built as one of the first 1974 "Sold" on Nov. 13 1973. It took a month from Oct to get it, and they were willing to build another, since it was dinged up. We needed it for Holiday deliveries so I got stuck with it. I always figured since I ordered no trim and an FM MXP stereo @ $280., it pissed off the trim guys while it waited in the radio turn out.  I wanted the no trim and no holes to rust out later. I paid $3700 cash out the door. The auto trans.998, power steering, power disc brakes were a waste of money, since the base price was $2900.00 + tax and shipping. I should have got the free 3 speed on the floor and bought the Cuda wheels instead.
Still shinny, no rust, radio still works great and now a 440 automatic. I could use some fresh paint to finally get what I wanted, back then.
A low build #BH,,G,, 202830  I still store the #" matching 318 and complete axle housing, 999 Trans. is a 1977.
