Title: My full restoration progress, complete 72 Cuda restoration
Post by: pdsbartech on December 22, 2014 - 07:01:41 pm
So now that things are coming together now that all the parts are finally here, I guess I post the past progress from 4 months ago until now. This is my 72 Cuda, that's gone under the knife with a full restoration. In short, the car was a 340 car, I pulled the engine and transmission out, wrapped it up and put on a pallet to store at my business. Bought a 440 and had it build and stroked and added an 8-71 with the rest of the engine goodies. All fresh paint custom interior, stock dash removed and a custom dash going in with all Autometer gauges. Suspension is a complete ride tech air bag system with the 4 link rear.  There is a lot more but I will continue to post pictures and more information as it's going on. Cheers

Also note, the paint and body went through a full job last year, but some asshole thought it would be a cool idea to key the entire passenger side of the car in July. I was so pissed and upset. So I decided to have then just redo it again that needed to be done.

Update without pictures. Fuel system and fuels lines were put into today. Thank god I'm doing this all right the first time and not skipping any corners on parts or installation, but damn this is getting expensive. With parts, paint, engine, etc I'm about 60k into it. I think my next restore will be a Chevelle. Lool

It's been a while, after dropping the rear for the air bags, the trunk pan was in bad shape and we we to replace it. That's all finally done after all the work and now the motor is complete. For some reason, non of the damn blower pulleys and the March pulleys wanted to work together. So we could a GM alternator other things for it to work.

But, I'm now selling my 8-71 to go ahead and buy a 10-71. Nothing wrong and zero hours since being overhauled. $1500(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/21/c5f3d1649da2fa85e3a9bb6ebe127f66.jpg)

How are you mounting the air bags?  It looks like you have an extra upper mounting bracket in the rear...that's good.  You need a strong mount because the stock shock x-member is very weak.  Air shocks can break the stock mount.  I don't see an extra mount up front though.  The factory upper shock mount was never meant to hold the weight of the car.  You will have problems if you don't reinforce that area.  Mounting the bag to that upper mount would probably work for a race car but I doubt it will hold up on the street.  You'll probably see some cracking/bending of the inner fender.  I'd hate for something to happen after all your hard work.  :2cents:

Yes, and it fits nice. There is a gap in the upper right that didn't make it flush, but with a washer and different bolt made it nice and tight

Jeez. Who knew that being so close to being finished with the restore would be the longest time. So many odds and ends trying to get right. Got a custom radiation built since the one I could previously wouldn't fit because of the electric fans and the blower belt would hit. Had to get a custom one made with mounts and another set back. Also had an issue with exhaust and the air bags, with lowering would cause a problem with the QTP cutouts being 3". Now doing a different route. Seems it never ends but at the end of the day, it's what I want and the look I want

Hope. Cutting the main core support for the radiator to fit properly and with the electric fans. I hated that. But it needed to be done. I'm not doing a OEM car build. So I don't care. But exhaust going on now. Should be interesting. With the 3" exhaust and the electric cut outs, it's gonna be loud.

Finally got around to doing the exhaust. Not much longer until first start up. Slow and steady to make sure it's all done right and on my schedule but that's few and far between now a days. It's a tight squeeze doing the 3" all the way out with the air ride, new tank and fuel pump assembly. So going to do a step down and see how that works out. Kind of a bummer but do what I gotta do.

I looked at the same thing and determined that 3" was just too big to fit well. I am using 2.5" Magnaflow stainless. haven't installed it yet though.

I'll get the specs for you. I know they are 18x8 in the front and 18x11 in the back. But the back spacing I'm not sure of. I need to go through my book and see exactly. With the air ride, we had the do some mods in the back

But with those pictures you see. I'll try and get a picture soon of it lowered down an inch with the air bags. It's super killer looking. I own a business in oil and gas so funding is not as good as it used to be. So gotta do it in sections when the wife allows it. Economy sucks for us right now, but getting better. Car should have been done 8 months ago.

Weather cleared up here in Houston for a bit and found a break in the clouds to take it to a wrap shop and get some things done. That's just one section of the parking lot, didn't get one of the front side. Was great weather in Houston.
