I have a working 1976 Torqueflight 727 3 speed in my 440 1970 Challenger which I'm restoring. I removed the pan to remove dents and found a bolt, a small filler plug and a nut which fits the filler plug. I cannot see anywhere obvious where they are missing from. Could a transmission expert tell me where they are from? See pics

There are not many nuts in that transmission.
I suspect that is an adjuster for a band, but don't recall which would have had a nut on the inside of the trans...? The bolt may pass for a valve body bolt?

I think Mike nailed it on both points.... Low/Reverse band adjust broke & a valve body bolt, even though all ten valve body bolts are in place, it looks like one bolt has been changed with a more generic bolt.... Why the old bolt got left in the pan??? No idea.... Picture in the band adjuster with a wrench on it....

Great analysis guys - thanks. That adjuster has broken off. From the dents in the pan (from inside to out) I'm guessing the stray bolt got under the adjuster which hit it and broke. Why the bolt? - all 10 valve bolts look original and the same with the M stamp. Perhaps a repairer "lost" the bolt in the fluid and just replaced it. Advice now on that adjuster please. If I just leave it, it will eventually come loose? Best to try and get remnant out and replace with another bolt with the locknut. Any risks associated with this? I can do pretty much everything on cars but these things are like wizardry to me!

You can probably back the adjuster off by grabbing it with vise grips above the lever, as for reinstalling it as you run it in the band will tighten up till the adjuster suddenly gets allot harder to turn... Don't try to turn it any further.... The spec is 72 inch pounds... Quite honestly the adjuster goes from easy to turn to off the chart very suddenly, just use a small wrench & you'll know, then back the adjuster off 2 1/4 turns & tighten the lock nut.... But not nearly as tight as the last guy...

Thanks 1 Wild R/T. Followed your instructions and worked perfectly. The remnant was loose and easy to remove. There was no tension on it. Made and fitted new adjuster. Quite long travel to get tight. I imported this car from Yreka to UK this summer. Hadn't run for 35 years and needs full restoration so I only know that it moves in forward and reverse at walking pace. Can you tell me what that adjuster does?
