panel welds
« on: June 06, 2018 - 06:40:30 AM »
1st photo - at factory did they smear seam sealer along the circled join and the join running at right angles  to hide the welds. I am thinking that these panels would have been spot welded. I want to remove the stitch weld and replace with a plug weld so there is a nice clean join.  ???

2nd photo - Will these welds be visible  if I leave them, should they be there ? Will there tail light cover this join ?

Opinions and photos please

Cheers

In reference to the 2nd photo above. Just had a look in my "Challenger and Barracuda " book by Jim Schild , and there were 2 photos of 71' cudas from behind, both showed a chrome trim that runs around. the tail panel. Is this an optional  or standard piece  ? do not recall this in my parts. I assume this would cover the welds ?

In picture 1, that circled area would be spot welded by the factory. I would recommend that you use a spot welder bit and drill a couple of spots in the top, then weld them up, then cut the welds that you are there right now. That way nothing is moving plus you dont have to use any clamps.

As for picture #2, you shouldn't see those welds because that area should be seam sealed. You need to push seam sealer in there to keep water and crap from getting between those panels. This is done from the outside and doesnt take a lot. When done, it should look like 1 undisturbed seam. That said, you have to go out of your way to really see it when done.

I'd suspect the car has had a lower trunk panel replaced back in the day and spot welders weren't what they are today, so the guy seam welded the panel to the 1/4.

Most likely, a lot easier to seam weld than plug weld in terms of time.

Back in the day, we used to set the torch a bit lean and having clamped the two panels together, burn through the outer one and then hit it with a spot of brass and if you did it right, it fusion/braze welded it at the same time. I never saw one of those welds fail either. People yap about brazing being so terrible, but in the hundreds of patches and panel replacements I did, I never saw one come back. Just my  :2cents:
