Why do people build them? Cause someone will buy it.... Use to be a guy in my complex that built two a year, mostly scrap that he gave nothing or next to nothing for & he never failed to get them sold the first show he took it to.... Usually for 15-25K.... Not bad for a hobby.... Don't know about you but my hobby costs me money...

I mean the one posted sucks, Motor is to modern, wheels are shiny.... Body proportions aren't right, a guy with the eye could fix it but as is it sucks....

looks like straight headers.

rat rods are a way to get rid of a lot of junk sitting around your
shop or garage.  And I'm sure there's fun in building them.

street legal/safe is a whole other question.  Don't want some
weld breaking at 70 mph.

Why would a weld break on a rat rod and not on anything else ?  :clueless:

Do you trust that the vehicle shown is structurally sound?
A weld can break if the design of the vehicle is inadequate.
Remember, some of these vehicles are assembled
with people's leftover junk.

And that is different than "some" 70 Cudas  ? My point is that a quality welder or crappy welder is going to do the same quality whether its a rat rod or not.

ok, but my point is that you can have a good weld, yet the vehicle
can self destruct from poor materials or poor design. A good weld
can still fail, if the loads it sees, while the rat rod is driving around,
are greater than its breaking point.

The frame on that thing looks pretty flimsy, to handle the torque
of that big block at full throttle.

I don't see a wife giving up garage space for something like that.

The "fad" has been out there for around 18-20 years now. So are very well engineered, but built with old parts. Some are simple POSs, no different than a "restored" Cuda with 5 gallons of  bondo, household carpet, and electrical tape, which I've seen linked on here as well.

There is a 38 Chevy pickup rat rod in my area. All of the metal was dipped in acid then rinsed and left outside for a couple weeks. He then sprayed a dull clear sealer of some type on it. The engine was also acid dipped but not painted, the valve covers were installed without gaskets and ran for about 100 miles before being properly sealed. But, it has a corvette rear end and the 427 has 500hp.  :D

Rat rods are awesome and a thrill to build. I built my 52 in 14 months whereas I have been working on my Cuda for 10 years... When I first saw one I wasn't impressed but as I studied them I became interested because of the ingenuity required to make it all work. As far as the "engineering" goes, sure there can and is poorly built versions just as there are with any other vehicle (a shiny turd is still a turd) but most of the rat rods I have seen are better built than a lot of other types out there.

Don't be a hater... (not a fan of a chebby engine in there though...).
