Ok I know I am a nub and dont mind taking my lumps when I ask dumb things but here goes. I have found 6.1 liters for around the 7-9k range, but I have found the 5.7 liters with under 20k miles for 3500. My question is strictly going off performance and preferences of the guys who comment is the 6.1 really worth the excess cash. Can you just get better fuel delivery for the 5.7, headers, and a cam and get more performance for a more cost effective upgrade? Thanks guys for any advice or insite.

I would say get the 5.7. If you spend half of what you save from buying the 6.1, you can easily get up to and beyond the output of the 6.1. Headers, new program, supercharger, etc.

IMHO you can find much better prices than that if you have patience look around at different sources. I personally don't think the inflated price difference between the 6.1 and 5.7 hemis is warranted or justified. For what you get, the 5.7 is a much better deal and the money you save on the 5.7 can be used to build a much stronger engine than what you would get with the 6.1.

6.1 can be had around $6K and still coming down in prices. 5.7 are much cheaper as you have found out. Just add the total of what you want to do. Buying a truck 5.7 and having to get a new intake and front drive setup to fit and look better can easily negate the cheaper price over a car model 5.7. As far as the 6.1 there is no cheap way out. Simple cam swap can get you to the stock 6.1 horsepower level. You can also easily duplicate the look of a 6.1 by updating valve covers and coils, etc. if I was going to drop the money for a 6.1 I'd hold out for the newer models with alum blocks.

Maybe a few months, In my experience is does cost a lot of money. But hey that�s the hobby.
My setup

5.7 2006 charger engine 30.000 mls.
Transmission 518 46rh 1995.
Transplant mounts .
Radiator
Headers.
Transplant oilpan
Fuel pumps including swirl pot setup
Fast EFI computer
Power steering conversion
Dynamo regulator
Flex plate
Shifter setup.
410 with lsd dif. (optional)

These are the parts that I can remember and then numerous small thing but they add up. On top of my restoration a lot is new. The price is not the engine its everything else. Your 9k is probably the least for an 5.7 I probably spent between 10-12 k euro. If you skip the injection you probably can do it 2-3 cheaper. In my opinion that is what Appealed to me.
