Need to quiet this thing down. Suggestions?
« on: May 27, 2020 - 08:34:07 AM »
I must be getting old but the Challenger needs to be quieted down.  I currently run stock exhaust manifolds, full 3 inch TTI exhaust with X-pipe and Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers.  It is just too load for my liking.  After a cruise my ears ring for an hour. Any suggestions on quieter mufflers?  I am thinking about MagnaFlow mufflers but I'm not sure they will be any quieter than what I have now.  Thanks!!

I assume the mufflers are in the stock location? have you thought about adding resonators in the rear? I would reach out to Magniflow directly and talk to them about what you want, they do a huge amount of R&D and are pretty knowledgeable about this issue.

Yes the mufflers are in the stock location, resonators is a good suggestion. I'll give MagnaFlow a call to see what they have to say.  Thanks for the suggestions.

Welcome. Do you have any sound deadening in the car? Makes a HUGE difference.

I did line the floor with sound deadening.  I can't remember the brand but it was a rubbery product with a tin foil like backing.  The car is a convertible so that doesn't help matters I'm sure.  I know Mopar called them resonators but weren't they basically just a straight through muffler?

Sounds like dynamat but then all of them look pretty much the same (sound deadener).

Yes, the resonators were I believe to reduce some of the "boom" because it echos through the trunk. Many guys used to remove the mufflers and leave the resonators only, thats the way my 70 Challenger is (440 6 pack).

" Many guys used to remove the mufflers and leave the resonators only, "  While I didn't do it, the PO did and I like it quite well. FWIW

That should work out well, should still sound "muscley" but not too loud.

I got the Dynomax Ultraflow mufflers installed in the resonator location beside the fuel tank. They tucked up in there real nice.  Made the difference I was looking for.  It still has a nice idle tone and going down the road is much improved.  I can actually hear the radio and talk to a passenger without having to raise my voice....lol.  Thanks for the input.
