Aligning Hurst Shifter Linkage
« on: April 20, 2017 - 01:16:12 PM »
Can some one tell mewhat I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to put my linkage back on the 4 speed tranny, I got it right on the tranny but cant seem to get it to shift. The manual says to use  tool C3951 to make sure the shifter is in neutral. can I just use a bolt to go threw all 3 linkages on the  shifter. Thanks for any help Also the car 70 Cuda has the coloum lockout but I don't have all the pieces yet,it can be hooked up later right  Thanks again

Allen key holds the shifter linkage in one spot, then adjust the rods to fit.

disconnect all three linkages, insert alignment tool of choice through all three levers and the center guides on both sides of the levers... Now adjust the linkages rods to drop into each lever....If parts are sloppy this is a good time to replace bushings & spring clips.... If your shift levers have two holes the inner holes require a little more effort to shift but are a shorter throw...

The half circle at the outside that is the neutral location & there is a second hole on the backside.... They identify neutral or the "center".. Or in other words you've got it....

I got that but when I hookup the shifter rods witheverthing in netural it wont shift. I pull it over for reverse and it wont even move the linkage. I'm wondering if there something wrong with the shifter. It was in the trunk when I bought the car. The motor and trans are sitting on the k member so its easy to work on  Thanks

Can you verify neutral on the transmission?
Are you able to click the trans into each gear then back to neutral using moderate force with all the rods off?

Yes I can, with the rods off the shifter. It is in nutraul when u can turn the output shaft,in gear u cant. When I push the handle over for reverse it wants to move the other 2 linkages. I tried it with 1 an 2 an 3an4 unhook but it wouldn't move the reverse linkage. In hook it from shifter an can shift it by hand. Its got me stumped Thanks
