Can I reuse head gaskets?
« on: April 15, 2017 - 09:53:27 pm »
Long story short, put new fel pro head gaskets on my 416 with aluminum heads today.  I torqued them down and had an issue so I needed to take them off. 5 minutes they were on and the car was never fired, Am i good to reuse.

Spray them with Copper Coat & put them back on..... No Problem.... I've done it & I've seen it done dozens of times.... If It had been run I'd never chance it, not fired & coated with Copper Coat no worries...

I've used copper or aluminium rattle can paint on used head gaskets on my 10.5-1 compression  KZ-1000 with no problems. Spray it on cleaned gasket and bolt it down before paint dries.

Chalengerx -- Just ~5 minutes??? You're most likely safe and ok to use the Fel-Pro head gaskets again... what number are they... #1008 is race wire-ring gaskets... best out there to defend against detotonation/pre-ignition!   The 8553 are just regular gaskets... ok for mild/normal street usage.   Just be sure to re-install with the same left/right sides and same heads.

I was a former Fel-Pro engineer and if I were you, I'd feel safe to re-use them.... in fact, I know I've probably done it in the past.

PS:  take a close careful look at the facings... there is antistick coatings on the fiber facings... as long as it not torn, you should be OK.... no need for any supplementary spray coatings!

98% chance will be OK, 2% chance will have to tear down the engine?

Mopar Mitch, yes literally 5 minutes or less and they are 1008 gaskets. I figured it would be fine so I finished it up putting the intake back on only to decide that it will bother me and tore it all back apart. Safe than sorry I guess as I don't want to be the 2 percenter lol.

that's the big issue for me, driving with peace of mind I've
done everything right to prevent an engine failure. It would haunt me!
