Dead!!!
« on: April 14, 2017 - 09:34:10 am »
I've been using a Pertronix system (flame thrower II dist., coil and second strike box) for four years problem free. Pulled out two weeks ago to go to the first car show of the year, and the car dies instantly. No spark! no loose wires, power where it should be, still grounded. I changed the Ignitor II in the distributor, nothing. Changed coils, nothing, and I don't run a ballast resistor.
I don't know how to find out if the problem is in the distributor or the second strike box. I've had plenty of advice, but none helpful. I should have come here first, you guys have seen it all. Any help would be appreciated. I'd sure like to be back on the road!

its a pretty basic system, you said you changed the ignitor, is the gap to large? your sure you connected all wires? not reversed accidently? a simple test with a light to see if dizzy is discharging spark should allow you to isolate the issue

power where it should be

Just double checking...
You have power on the brown wire while cranking and power on the blue wire in the "run" position, correct?

What is a "second strike box"?

Yeah, everything is reconnected like it was for 4 years. I've rechecked connections 20 times. The Pertronix dist. mounts the ignitor on 2 studs, not allowing movement for adjusting an air gap. No slotted hole. I contacted Pertronix, they want me to send them the old and new Ignitor so they can check them. Just a time killer, not likely both are dead.

I had a flame  thrower coil fail after about 20 starts. Sent it back and they gave me a new one, good for a year now.
Not sure if they had a bad run. I read on other sites about people complaining about bad coils also.

Thanks guys! I sent the Ignitor to Pertronix like they requested. I'll see what they say.

you'd think they have a simple test to do, that you can do, as MSD does

Never heard of that before.  Did you try taking that box out of the loop?  You should be able to run the Pertronix by itself.  Let us know what they say when you hear back from them. I've got a new Pertronix distributor that I'm going to run in my Dart.  Really nice looking piece.  I hope it works as good as it looks.
