Electrical woes

I have had numerous issues, but making some progress. Currently when i flip on the blinkers, my aftermarket radio goes dead and then has to be set back up all over again. Gas gauge doesn't work, has a new sender and has power getting back to it. Temperature gauge doesn't work, dash lights do not work and yet i have power getting to it all. Any ideas? where do i start?

make sure everything is well grounded. dash frame to body, gauge cluster to dash frame, switches, etc. etc.

First thing I did was to replace the gage cluster voltage regulator.That got me back all my gages.

Checking and even adding grounds is good, also check/pull the wire plugs at the firewall fuse/wiring block and Check for corrosion.

where is the gage voltage regulator located at?

It is on the backside of the gauge cluster
The regulator is the green item.

That is an Electrolytic Capacitor sometimes called a condensor, used to filter out stray voltage signals to the regulator. If your new regulator is made from silicon electronics, solid state, there is not much use for the capacitor anymore. However just to be safe, you can use a regular electrolytic capacitor rated at 16 volts or higher at say 47 microfarads in value. Connect the negative terminal of the capacitor to chassis/ground.

As for your radio I'm guessing possibly you do not have the constant power wire (usually yellow) connected to constant power.
One source is a terminal at the bottom of the fuse block labeled BATT or Battery.  Should end the need to reprogram.

I was able to get into most of my dash, and i found that i do have a capacitor and a voltage regulator installed on the backside. Now that i can see wires, i guess i can start testing to see if i have any voltage to gages and lights. Does the metal frame that the light switch, dimmer and the wiper switch haas to be grounded? Can i have the switches attached and dangling while i test things? What about the fuse block on the firewall, does it have to have metal firewall contact? Paint and sound deading between it.

Switch panel needs to be grounded for the wipers to park... Other than that test away.... Fuse panel/bulkhead connector is not grounded..

Hi, I have a 71 Cuda with a rally dash and the Instrument panel regulator keeps blowing. I have burnt up 3 regulators so far and can't figure out what is going on. Anyone experience this?

Sounds like one of your gauges might be grounding out on the power input side...

Does it smoke the IVR immediately or does it work for awhile?
