Misc Electrical questions,,,,
« on: October 14, 2017 - 09:43:46 pm »
Car is almost done,,,motor and trans in,,,running,,
I wired up a MSD 6AL,,plumbed some aftermarket gauges ( oil press, H2O temp, volt ), tach, etc,,,,
Questions:
1) Is there a common ground that would be good to use for the aftermarket gauges ? ( I have several gauges that need to be grounded,,,Where would be a good place to ground all of these things ? )
2) Dome light does not work,,,,(perhaps a ground issue with the door switch ?
3) Trunk light does not work,,,,,does this "active" when the trunk opens or is this run off the dash ?
4) Switch for the bright's ( front headlights ),,,doesn't work,,,
I struggle with electrical stuff,,,so forgive me for the above questions,,,,would like to fix all of this myself,,,and learn some stuff in the process....

Doug

First ground the dash frame to the car body with few braided ground straps then ground the gauges to the dash frame. Do you have a 12 volt test light?

3) Trunk light comes on when the trunk is open, mercury switch within the socket housing. Make sure there's a good ground where it screws to the trunk lid.

Also do your brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal?

I've had a couple of them that never went bad, but I guess anything's possible. The one in my car still works after decades of trunk slamming. Here's a picture of a glass encased one showing how they work. When tilted the mercury rolls to the contacts and completes the circuit.
