Yes, another exhaust post
« on: December 27, 2007 - 02:55:37 PM »
So, I've read quite a few older posts regarding opinions on exhaust systems. I'm in the later stages of a resto with a '72 cuda, 340 bored .30 over and built nicely. I'm running TTI headers and will also run the TTI 2.5" X pipe system. I'm really stuck on which muffler choice to go with. I want to be aggresive, not only when getting on it but also at idle. Opions please on Flowmaster 40 , magnaflow , dynomax , and hooker aero chamber. Thanks, --Ed '72 Cudaguy    :clueless:

Flowmaster 40 equals loud, tinny sound under accelleration with considerable interior resonance at 2000 rpm and considerable interior noise the rest of the time. Go to the Flowmaster web site for comparison audio of their different muffler types.

Dynomoaxx depends on which one you get. Their basic entry level turbo is similar to all other turbo mufflers, throaty at idle, kinda loud under power, mild interior noise.

I have no personal experience with the others.

I think TTI recommends Dynomax. I have them on my Cuda with a 3 inch system. They sound good! I still wear ear plugs. Flowmasters were horrible in the interior sound department. I was deaf after 30 minutes on the road.

It seemed as though all of the Engine Masters Challenge participants were using Magnaflow. A personal favorite of mine for a mean sounding idle is glass packs.

Get a titanium exhaust setup instead of stainless.

It will ring atleast 20DB's louder.
Only if the muffler bearings are made of unobtainium.

I have a tti 2.5" exhaust system with the X-pipe and Dynomax super turbo mufflers. I love them, Lucy is kind of quiet inside (for a 440ci). Still audible but not real loud due to the sound deadening we have. My 'Cuda will have none and I'm running a 3" x-pipe Dynomax super turbo muffler system. I love mine and would recommend them to anyone. I like loud but also there's no point having it over the top loud when your car doesn't match the noise, makes it look slow when you hear it and see it driving, if that make sense.

Here's the car at idle: http://www.carlwalski.com/Lucy12.html

I'm running the TTI system with the Dynomax mufflers they supply, I love the whole system. I can't say enough good about the way TTI ststems fit, look and sound.

I've got hooker headers and 3" super 40s dumped at the rear axle.  They sound amazing in the car.  I have a built 340 as well.  The car is very aggressive sounding.   Here is a video I put together of the car idling, in-car sound, and a driveby.  I hope this helps you out.  http://media.putfile.com/CEV1

I really like the Dynomax mufflers and think you will like the sound level they put out.

Hooker Aero chambers have a great sound & are well built & generally are less expensive as well
