Brake lights not working, turn signals do
« on: October 03, 2017 - 07:33:08 am »
Hey everyone long time since I have logged in, Mostly because I have sold my 74 Challenger and picked up a Freshly restored 72 Challenger.

It has a whopping 480 Miles since it came off the rotisserie and I am in the process of fixing all the small stuff that comes up once a car is all put back together.

Yesterday I went to get a safety, which is required for licensing a car in Ontario and all of a sudden my brake lights no longer work. The turn signals work, the fuses are fine, the tail light housings are attached to the body with the proper teeth like washers, the connectors under the steering wheel are clean and tight. Every other electrical item in the car works: Dome light, cigar lighter, gauge lights, gauges, headlights, high beams, license plate light, reverse lights, all side marker lights...The only items that does not work is the clock and the fan motor on the heater.

Where are the grounds that would affect the lights? I want to re-check those, otherwise what else would you guys suggest? My forte is not electrical.

while we are at it, the fan motor worked when it was out of the car and magically does not now, is that likely another ground issue?

Tried this. They work fine. Still no brakes.

Bad ground somewhere, bogus brake switch?

Grab a test light, probe the white wire coming from the brake light switch... It should have power when the brakes are applied....

Power?  No? check for 12v on the pink wire coming into the brake light switch...  12v Yes - Bad switch....No - check the fuse.... Or wiring....
Back to power on the white wire..... Yes, Check to see if it makes it to the turn signal switch, White wire on the pointy end of the 8 pin T/S connector..... If it does replace the turn signal switch....

The grounds for my tail lights are right at the sockets, a separate tab for push-on spade.

Right bulbs?

If the turn signals & emergency flashers work it's not a ground issue.... Same bulbs, same wiring.....The turn signal switch receives the power from the brake light switch & sends it out the same wires as the T/S... When you operate the turn signal at the same time as the brake lights one bulb will be on steady (Brake Light) & one will be flashing.... (T/S)

I jumped power from one side of the brake switch to the other and just like that I had brake lights.

The next question is how much travel is required before that switch operates? My brakes are obviously newly bled, with all new components so there is not a lot of travel.

It's up to you to determine it. If you watch, you'll see a screw that attaches the switch on the frame, if you unscrew it, you will be able to alter it front and back depending on how you want this to open.

P.S. Did you push the switch back and forth with your finger? Did the brake light work OK?

If you have power brakes start the engine while checking the brake lights as the pedal does go down as far after the vacuum goes away.
