CD radio selection to fit stock dash holes

well moparnut it sounds like it  
i thaught that the holes were part of the dash and would have to be cut. sorry, my bad.

There is a difference between the 70 model (reflections) mounting location and the 72-74 models and consequently likely a difference in the holes/ slot in the respective dashes  ?  Isn't this correct? One location is to the right of the sterring column and the other is the the left and lower in the dash.

I have only ever seen a square hole in the lower right dash on any year e-body.

Moparnut, have you pulled your radio out, as the 2 knobs on the left of the radio stay with the radio, there are no holes in the dash they go through first.

Mines a '74

The adapter plate which is for the 2 knob type will be removed. The only trick to gettin it off, is removing the trim pieces so that you can see it does remove.

The trim piece which matches up to the dash pad, will need to come off. There are some screws that you need to remove from dehind the dash.

Then there is also the trim piece that the face plate of the radio covers. Some screws are behind the dash, and inside the ashtray area. Yea, you got to also remove the ashtray and bracket to get at them.

TIP: There is no snaps holding anything together like on new cars. So dont force anything, thinking it will pop off.

My radio is out when i got the car,havent look closley enuf to tall if the plate comes out but now i think it does

Here is what the bezel looks like without the front lower trim in place.

And they all had the slot to clear the 8-tracks no matter what radio was in there. I get tired of guys selling on e-bay with an example like this calling it an 8 track bezel, yeeesh.

I'll put my 2 cents in...........
Just about any radio you purchase today is a "din" mount (rectangular cage).  All din mounts are the same dimension, the only difference in din cages are the depth of the tabs that are bent over to hold the cage into the dash and how the radio actually snaps into the cage. Most dins have a variety of tabs cut at angles to be pretty much universal in ability to mount them.
To mount a din cage, slide it thru the opening and bend at least four tabs over to put pressure on the back of the opening that you have slid the din cage into. (Does that make sense?) Also make sure you support the back of the radio with some type of bracket so the pressure of a  radio hanging in the opening does not crack the plastic on the back of the dash that the tabs are pressed against.  It's a very easy project and you should have no problems installing just about any brand of radio. I recommend to stay away from the cheap/unknown brands. Any Pioneer, Sony, Blaupunkt, Kenwood, Alpine, Panasonic, Sanyo or even Jensen thats not a shaft radio will work just fine. (Most of em don't even make a shaft radio anymore).  Look for din/iso mounting.
