How does it compare to Valleys of Neptune? I was pleasantly surprised how good that song is.

Valleys of Neptune is the name of the new record.  That tune is pretty cool, but not my favorite. There are a few new tunes and some really good versions of some old classics.  The version of Stone Free is awesome.  The other remakes are mostly from War Heroes, Cry of Love, and Rainbow Bridge.  Nothing really new, but Jimi never played anything the same twce.  Finally it has been done right.  Allan Douglas really took liberties in the past, and they have really straightened it out.

The mastering and mixing are just awesome. It sounds so analog and the tracks are really alive and just sizzle.    I am dying to get ahold of the vinyl. I have not found a copy in San Diego yet.  Most stores get it Friday.

It does not hold a candle to his 1st 3 records, so unless you are a die hard jimi fan, or a guitar fanatic, get those first if you do not already have them.  .

What is your setup for records? Is it true to get a system that digs out the small details in the vinyl it costs thousands or is there a basic system that will do a good job? I am sure it is a pita to get any needle and groove system, much less a quality one.

Just heard this version for the first time - I think Dakota Fanning did a pretty good job...

I'm stoked to see this movie, the Runaways are a favorite of mine - I've had a crush on Joan Jett since I was a kid.

Basically the more you spend, the better you sound with new gear.  I like tube equiptment,  My buddy builds amps and has a very high end system he built himself.

I have high end '70s gear.  A Marantz 2270 reciever, a Thorens TD160 with an Ortophone cartride.  My friend built the speakers.

I really like the high end '70s stuff.  Marantz and the solid state McIntosh stuff is great.  A killer Marantz will set you back around $3-400.  A Mac $600 or so.  MyThorens was about the best you could get back then, I picked it up dead mint for $250.  Spend another $3-400 on a good cartridge and you are there.  You can get some good speakers under $500.  You will need to clean your recorde to get the best fidelity out of them.  I use a discwasher system.   Another important thing is turntable setup.  Tracking and weight make a big difference.   You can find out all this stuff online.

One of these days I will get a killer tube system, however right now my car is my priority for my extra money...

This old gear requires work and maintenance like our cars, but thats half the fun!
