Title: BUILD PARTY - 6/13 through 6/15

This weekend we got to see both 4C and Andy. Andy mentioned that he's talked to a few members about having a build party next weekend.

I know it's short notice, but it seems like a few people are already planning the trip. I thought that - if this is the final push - might as well rally the troops.

Andy, I'm sorry if this is premature, or if someone else was taking the torch - if so, let me know and I'll take this down. But after seeing the car today, dude... ...you're so close. Let's get 'er done!!! I logged in tonight and was surprised that it wasn't already mentioned.

Andy lives in Ann Arbor, MI (and I try not to hold that against him!) I won't give out his address, but if you think you can come by next weekend to lend a hand, try reaching him, myself, or Brad.

That engine and front cradle have to get in that car!
We are too close, and a few extra bodies can meke it happen. I don't care if we have to push him down the road!

Engine:
Has a Torque converter 2800
Does not have a flex plate
Bolts to crank- 6-11-14
Bolts to converter 6-11-14
No fuel pump
Fuel supply line-told not to get- JimmyNick?
No Fuel line pump to carb-
Calling Dave tomorrow on the Accelerator linkage(throttle cable)
Carb-yes Serpentine belt set up (ST concepts) ---**does not have belt**
**Getting pulleys from Jerry**
Headers: yes, got 'em
Trans- yes; timing questionable
Driveshaft- no 4C and Brad to bring?
U joints- no
yolk - ??? Brad to bring spare

Cooling system:
Radiator-aftermarket; stock hose locations
Water pump- need a hi volume run in either direction Rad hoses- no
Radiator hoses - no

Ignition system/electrical
Alternator- NipponDenso- need pigtail for NiponDenso
Need battery cables
Has a new engine bay harness
Has chrome ECU, afraid it will burn out
Ballast resistor: 6-11-14
Coil-no
Dizzy-MEK, question on arrival time

Front suspension
Upper control arms yes, got em
Lower control arms yes, got em
Bushings--?? More definition needed
Ball joints yes,got 'em
Pitman arm- yes, got 'em
Drag link ass'y- yes,got em
Camber bolts- yes, got em
K frame bolts - yes, got em
Torsion bars - yes, got em
Steering box- DMZ- has spare, will check spline count.
Steering coupler-???
( I think he has it rebuilt)

PS - I've been in touch with Andy today - he's going to try to get a list together of stuff still needed.

I'm wondering if he got the engine pulleys and brackets yet. Last I knew he needed those still.

I rented a car. It was cheaper than driving my work van to Murrays. :grinyes: If you want me to swing by and pick you up I'm game for that? I can leave at anytime? Your in Cambridge right? If you want to split on a motel I could do that as well?

Some front suspension parts did get installed. Cathy is an amazing, amazing women. She is helping us, making car related phone calls, receiving visitors, tending to Andy and on and on.

Rear brakes are kicking our butt and holding up lowering from the rotisserie. Hopefully have that settled soon.

Great job guys! I know Andy was hoping the car would make it to Carlisle or the Nats. Is that possible at this point? Once the car is done, someone needs to take some good pictures of it. I see a car of the month and a calendar in its future.

I think Mopar Muscle magazine might want a story on it as well?

I think Cathy had a couple emotional moments watching it come together. We got the motor, transmission, front suspension (except shocks), fender gills and a few other a few other pieces installed. And for the first time in three years we got it off the rotisserie. Today we will tackle it again but we will not get this cool Cuda completed. Thanks to team and all the support from the members.

After we'd done some parts assessment/finding on Friday night, we had a late supper and were optimistic about Saturday, when about nearly midnight, Brad turned to me from his phone and said "Andy just passed away". Stupefaction and dismay were next. The next day, as per the photos, we dragged the old gal out of the garage and the slog began. Cathy was fantastic and we all got stoked to do this for both her and Andy. The hardest part was getting the Cuda off that damn rotisserie and it took about 6 guys, 4 hours to do it, 2" at a time. Parts were a problem and there were many trips to O'Reillys and some of the necessary pieces were just plain unavailable until Monday, so we got to the 2 yard line of getting it on it's own wheels by the end of Saturday @ about 8pm. Andy's whole family and his buddy Damon turned out and Amir went the extra distance to try to help us get wheels on it. It was a team effort and a great turnout and it was nice to put some faces to the names, even under the circumstances. The car should be nice when it's done and I'm sure Andy is cheering that on. It was a pleasure to try to help you matey and we all wished we'd've been able to carry you out to sit in it. Go with God Andy; we'll miss you. Ian :angelwings:

Doug (their son) and Dan Zimmerman are working on a final parts list. I suspect that there won't be a lot of really big items, though a distributor and exhaust are still on the list. I think it'll come down to a lot of little details - things like speedometer cable, various linkages, hoses, etc.

Dan suggested that they'd get the rest of the parts collected in the next few weeks, then try to organize a final build party to finish the car.

I can say that this was bittersweet. I know Andy was probably cringing, laughing, smiling, and crying from up above.
This was an incredible event.
Fate has a way of directing you to your ultimate goals.

"When I was on the phone last Monday with Andy, he said, Hell or high water, I'll have that motor done by Friday."
The 440 motor he had started to build was taken over by the machine shop. The machine shop threw in a ton of parts and labor to make it happen, as Andy was not healthy enough to get it done himself. They also measured for the pushrods, and ordered them for today's delivery.
Sadly, Andy passed away shortly after receiving the motor.
Amongst Andy's parts and pieces, I found his Fender Tag. Ironically, It was built on 6/12/72. What are the odds of being that close?
Many thanks to all whom have come out, or dug into their stockpiles of spare cash, or parts stash. Without you this would not have happened. We are still a ways from completion, but we are a heck of a lot closer!

When I first got there and went to see Andy my heart sank as I knew time was short. I too have had a few family members pass from cancer been there, done that burned the t-shirt!
I'm not sure if Andy was awake to hear what I told him, but thanks for allowing me the opportunity to say a few things to him.
For the members that could not be there I just wanted to say what an emotional feeling to go downstairs were Andy was storing most of his parts and see all the boxes some small ,some large with various members names on them from shipping Andy's parts that you donated. I should have taken a picture of that. Andy's car is beautiful and all but somehow that image was more beautiful to me! It made me very proud to be a member of this group. Although I've said this before it's worth repeating.... yes our cars are great and all, but it's the friendships I've gained because of the car that I value the most!
It was also great to meet face to face members I haven't met before. Ian (Jimmynick )sure is a work horse! and Dan too! Like picture this were/how else could you share a motel room with people you just met off the internet and still sleep soundly! :lol:
Cathy and family I'm sure the days ahead will bring tears and be difficult but know that we are here for you in anyway we can, you all are "family"! :sadwavey:

Ian don't feel slighted about signing the seat divider we didn't think of it till Sunday around noon.
That was the quickest engine install ever! I do them from time to time on stock cars but wow it was literally maybe 10 minutes! Dan brought over an engine stand and I welded up a makeshift k-frame dolly out of it. A couple of us lifted up the front end of the car , slid in the motor assembly and boom tightened 4 bolts and it was done! Taking it down off the rotisserie safely .... now that was a painful process! :grinyes:

Due to other obligations I did not make it to Andy's until Saturday. But I was still kept up on the situation by Dan & Brad. I was committed to making the trip no matter what. I had last spoken with Andy just last Monday. We chatted a bit. He was concerned what people would think of him if he made Carlisle next year. I told him they'll think your Superman. After a little while he said, BIGS, I gotta go lay down. I said get some rest I'll see you Saturday.

Obviously that didn't happen. I wasn't apprehensive about making the trip. But I was deeply concerned about showing up at someone's house right after a major family tragedy. I thought as I pulled up.... roll with it. I gathered some tools and walked across the street, it was good to see a familiar face or two. It was good to meet some members I only knew by handle. Cathy saw me thanked me for coming. The strength she showed over the weekend was absolutely phenomenal. She kept helping out where she could, parts, the where the why, things like that. Doug was involved the entire time I was there, willing to learn and taking direction. Working with guys you've never worked with is always a wild card. Ego's and attitudes can come to the surface real quick on projects sometimes. Especially ones with a high degree of emotion.

My hats goes off to the other members of the C-C build team! You guys were an absolute pleasure to work with! Everyone did something, no bull**** no nonsense. :2thumbs:

Was a little overwhelming at first . . . . There were parts everywhere! Just trying to grasp what to try to tackle first was a challenge in itself! Since the car was on the whirly jig . . . Really couldn't work on interior stuff much . . Main goal that came up was to have the car on the ground with engine installed with trans. We made that goal and more! Was exciting that the headers went in with little issues! We did have a problem with ball joints though and I think the end result was one or both were bad. Pretty much if you had a question about something and how it went together, out of the nine or ten of us there, someone had the answer! All in all, I was very proud to have been a part of this build! Something I will never forget! The day members on cc.com came from all directions to help a friend in his time of need. Although Andy was gone, we all knew he was there in spirit!

To each their own it seemed and it was cool to watch all those guys just grab something and go with it. Andy must have had a wee chuckle when he saw Dan hand make a brake shoe retainer from a piece of steel, only to find a bag with some in it about 20 minutes later- it never fails, does it? We had so many parts to paint that Cathy had to go back in the house to get more hangers! I further think that a shout out should go to Dave @ Roseville, since he's been a steady and stealthy participant all along here and continues to be so to this day. As Chris said- " you know, for a bunch of old white guys, we didn't do too bad", LOL. I hope Doug and Dan can get the old gal together and if they do, I further hope someone takes a few pics, since that'd warm the cockles of my old heart, just to see it so. He has put in countless hours on this project and continues to do so. His leadership, organizational skills, fabricating skills and attention to detail are exemplary. Andy's car would not be at the point it is today without him. Hats off to you Dan. It's a pleasure working with you. You're a class act.

Every one of you knew what to do. It was easy working with you all.
Rest assured, we will do this again soon. We are not quite out of the woods yet! My skills only go so far. I'm glad I could lean on you guys for everything.

It's too bad it was only a loaner, but it was loaned to him by Ralph Gilles, which is still pretty damned cool in my book!! I think they also only gave him the gray key... :)

I know that Doug has been collecting parts here and there and one of the guys that helped us (Darren) is still helping Cathy out from time to time.
We should definitely make it a point to try to help them out in the summer at some point.
Once Doug and Cathy amass a good amount of parts, we could be very helpful.

Thanks for the complements on the calendar page.
