Title: Trying to find my dad's Plum Crazy Challenger T/A
Post by: Koby on December 20, 2012 - 03:07:49 PM
Hello all,
My dad (Jerry Prater Seneca, MO) had a Plum Crazy T/A when he passed in 1987 in a car accident, I was 14 months old. My mom sold it to a friend of his shortly thereafter. I would love to find this car and possibly acquire it someday. I know that it was sold to Ward McGorder of Miami, OK and he later sold it to Dean Burwell in 1990. Dean Burwell supposedly bought and sold to Ron Slobe that owned R&R Salvage in Aurora, MO. I talked to Ron's widow, Cathy, she vaguely remembers a purple Challenger but has no idea what happened to it. Does anyone on here own a Challenger that was previously owned by Ron Slobe or know of the car I am talking about. I DO NOT have the VIN number and have run into dead ends with all leads trying to obtain the VIN number (license plate, DMV, insurance, bank, safe deposit box etc. It was an automatic and did have the original block and heads. At the time he had it, it did not have the White Vinyl top that it was supposed to and did not have any striping. It was supposedly special ordered by a gentleman in Colcord, OK and delivered to a dealership in Tulsa, OK. If you have any further leads or ideas for me, I would greatly appreciate it, this car would have lots of sentimental value to me if I could find it, because my dad loved it and I have no memories of him. Attached are the only pictures that my mom could find of the car.

Thanks for reading,
Koby Prater

Kool story.  Hope u find the ride.
If it is a real T/A it may be painted correct with stripes and hood over time.
Good hunting.....

You might want to drop Barry Washington a message over at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com (http://www.hamtramck-historical.com)  He runs a registry and maybe some of those names are familiar to him.

:iagree:  Barry is the best guy to contact although there is another member that has a registry as well for these cars but I forgot who that was...

I think this is the site: http://www.aarta.com/frame.html (http://www.aarta.com/frame.html)

Another member, DAYTONA, has had many of the T/A cars and he might also be a good resource.

That hood scoop is very unique and if anyone has seen it in the past I'm sure it'll ring a bell.

Hope you find it!

Thanks for the ideas and encouragement guys.  I was at my mom's house tonight and we were talking about it and she thought of one last place to check.  She found the loan documents and they had the VIN! I had already been in contact with Barry Washington, so I emailed him immediately.

His reply follows:
"Hi Koby,
The good news is that yes, I have heard of it.

The bad news is that it is in Japan. There is actually a photo of it on the website at http://www.challengertaregistry.com/photos/members_cars/sn310331.jpg (http://www.challengertaregistry.com/photos/members_cars/sn310331.jpg)

I have not heard from the owner in quite a while, hopefully he & the car survived the earthquake & tsunami.

The stripes & graphics on it were painted on before he bought it, but it is coded for black stripes. There is nothing unusual about its order number or tag data, so it definitely was not a 'special order' from the factory.

I can try sending him an email if you like? I am sure he would like to see your vintage photos of it.

Barry"

So there it is, all the way in Japan....

Anyhows, cool you know where it is.  Drop him a line, never know when the owner might get tired of it...  :2cents:

Oh you know I'm dying to have it, will probably have to wait until I am older and have more money.  Barry sent the guy an email, also said that the guy was very fluent in English and Barry didn't have much correspondence with him because of this.  Barry said this one was new to him in 2005 when he was contacted by the owner. Fingers crossed that it survived the Earthquake and tsunami.

Fantastic at least you found it and it survived up until 2005. Sadly I'm sure it would be a bit more pricy then a car in the US and then there is the shipping. I Wish you luck!

Currently in touch with owner that has it listed for sale, hopefully I'll be a T/A owner very soon. The car isn't numbers matching, but that's not what matters here. Big thanks to Barry in Alaska!

Now some more eye candy!

What is the asking price  and what kind money would it take to ship from Japan back to the US ?
I wouls think the current owner would have a lot invested having it shipped over seas...

I hope you get rid of the white T/A stripes, they look WRONG in my opinion. Same with the rear window louvers...just just don't belong with a white top.

Car has been in Japan since 1992. I personally like the white stripes with the white top, and am neutral on the window louvers.

$67,500 is priced just right for YOU.

You're getting a T/A that's worth $37,500 and paying an extra $30,000 just to have your Father's car back.

Nobody else on earth in their right mind would pay that much for that car.  If the current owner knows it was your Father's and you want it back....I'm surprised he's not asking $100,000.00

The white top is correct (and rare for a T/A) according to the fender tag, but no T/A was ever built with white stripes and they look totally out of place in my opinion. The louvers were added as well, which weren't available with V1W.

I think that car looks totally awesome!  Now that you have found the car, and it is for sale!  I would sale a kidney or whatever it took to get my fathers car back if it meant that much to you!

I really wish you the best of luck with this!

What? He doesn't know that first of all, and I have verified locally that is the advertised asking price. You've already stated your opinion on the stripes and louvers.

No it's not photoshopped.  I have over 50 pictures from two Japanese owners.

Post by: Jamiez on January 06, 2013 - 09:58:06 PM
I don't think that price is too far out of line if that's a real T/A.  Even good clones get that kind of money at auction if they are really well done/show quality cars.  The shipping is steep no doubt, but probably right for trans-Pacific.
Title: Re: Trying to find my dad's Plum Crazy Challenger T/A

Hey...If I'm the only one that thinks this T/A is only worth $35k - $40K.......  :villagers: Then ignore me.

Like others have said....Being your Father's car, it's obiviously PRICELESS to you...

If you have the funds, then the actual value doesn't matter.

Like I said, in my opinion you're paying a $30K premium for your Father's car... :2cents:

:2thumbs:  Just for reference.... I paid just over $2700 to ship my Challenger from CA to me here in Ontario, Canada? So 4500 is not that bad all things considered!  :2thumbs:
Just be carefull.... lots of scams out there!

Since the car is overseas the price is going to be more then average. Do I think it's overpriced Yes.

The Stripes cool, if it were mine I'd change it to black but that's me. Would keep the louvers for sure.

Never once did I say I was paying what he was asking.. There is a language barrier and time zone barrier, we haven't started negotiations yet.  Yes I am wiling to pay more than what you guys are saying it's worth, but not 30k more.

Also, I am arranging shipping, that's just one quote. Once I have a deal finalized, I will do some more checking, if anyone has contacts involved with importing/exporting cars, it would be great to have a bunch of leads.

With importing, one thing you have to consider are customs and import fee's/taxes/duty etc once landed on your end. Be sure to look at that, as it won't be included in that shipping quote.

Who knows how much more they are tacking on the price, if they even are upping the price because it's your dad's old car.  Like someone mentioned, who knows what the market is like over there for these cars.  Only thing I know for sure is that there are not many of those cars in Japan vs over here.

If it were me, as mentioned before, the car being your dads's old car, it is priceless.  If you can afford it, go for it.  You wouldn't want to have any regrets or thoughts like, "Yeah, I found my dad's old Challenger T/A but I didn't feel like spending the extra $$$ to get it back." and kick yourself for the rest of your life.  Your dad only had this one Challenger T/A and if it's something really special, go for it.  :grinyes:

One Debbie Downer thing to mention though as far as transporting it: I guess I would be really worried about people potentially taking it for joyrides or messing with it.  Make sure you go with a very reputable company.  There is a member here (Sledge Hammer) that sold his Challenger to someone I think in France and the car ended up getting stolen by people who worked the docks.  Not trying to scare you but just want to to be careful.

It's a beautiful car.  Hope all works out for you and you'll be happy.

Just for reference I shipped my Car from Georgia to my front door in Australia using http://www.schumachercargo.com/car-shipping/ (http://www.schumachercargo.com/car-shipping/) There shipping was painless and the car arrived in perfect condition
It was $1000 from Georgia to the LA docks (where the battery went flat, +$50 pushing fee)
Than $1526 to Sydney dock
Than 400, to my front door.
Total $2926 with an additional $1200 in customs

Schumacher also shipped my Brother's Camaro from Ohio for a similar price. When funds are sufficient and I import another car I'll defiantly use Schumacher again.

Good luck!

As noted, White Stripes were not stock on T/A's, but must admit I really like the White Stripes in this instance given they match up well with the Rare White VT.

Best of success with your negotiations.

I'm guessing the above picture is not the same car.
My guess is that the above picture is not a real T/A. The hood appears to be a steel hood with a scoop added, there is no side exhaust and the wrong rear spoiler which would used totally different holes in the deck lid.
Also if someone ordered the custom white stripes, if the got the engine call outs as well like your Father's car, then they would have most likely put them on at the same time.  :2cents:

I recently sold a 1971 Cuda for $60K to a guy in Germany. The new owner never felt it necessary to fly to Canada to check it out first, so I (as the seller) was dissapointed that I never got to meet the buyer.

I did request for him to send me picture of him with his new car so I could at least post them on my web site...

ALL 1971 340's built after mid-May 1971 were painted blue. The air cleaner remained wrinkle-black until the 72 model year when the switched to orange .

By far the best story I've read.  How old would your dad have been if he was still alive?  I'm guessing he would be in his early to mid 60's.  I applaud your mission to find his car and to go to the next level to get it back home despite the barriers you faced.   :2thumbs:

Post by: Koby on March 02, 2013 - 09:40:55 AM
Here ya go, but my dad was in the process of restoring it back to original when he had his accident. Legend has it that this car's broadcast sheet called for white stripes....Not to open up a can of worms, but it can't be coincidence that the owner from 1990 says that, and then down the road someone put white stripes on it.

So I'll be leaving it as found, besides the louvers, and repainting the rusty trunk floor.

This is one of those stories that give everyone hope. YOU traveled over seas to get your dads car and I'm sure you would have went further to get it no matter what condition it was in. I was devastated when my car was damaged at the boarder bringing it home, my wife said she has never seen me so down, but there is lots of ups and downs in owing a car and this is a UP for sure. People that are not car people wont understand the high you must be feeling right now or why you went as far as you did to get the car. Men and women have a special bond with there cars and i couldn't imagine the bond you will have with this car considering it was your late fathers. Keep everyone updated on this car as I know I will be looking back at this thread to get inspiration when things get hard. This is one of my favorite stories about someone being reunited with a car and when i tell others the story, they cant believe it but when they hear it they are genuinely happy for you. enjoy it and post more pictures!!!

Ahhhh.....covered trailers are for "garage trophies".....I was hoping you bought this car to drive and enjoy ! If Carlisle is too far of a drive, don't be afraid of an open trailer.....If the car gets wet...it'll dry off.....You're going to find you'll be cleaning it more then driving anyways....that's half the fun !

U-Haul rents open trailers fairly reasonable....

If it's the same ta  I like the black top and stripe better.  Great story  , Has the car been checked for radiation exposer?  Or was it on the other side of the disaster?   The shipping price question never got answered for some reason.  I know you saw it, but it would of helped future buy sell members here to give them an idea of what it might take to do a transaction like you did.  What you paid for it is what it was worth to you and that's all that matters. It probably won't leave your family for quite some time now as it is anyways.

It is his first one, I bought his second one. I don't know where the first one is, or any paperwork on it for that matter, it was traded in 1974.

Shipping, for a container and all the customs fees and exams and delivered 1500 miles from the port at LA, around $6500.

As many have said before, this is a great story. One of the best car related stories that I read in a while (and one certainly worthy of being published). A lot of things had to fall into place for it to happen and fortunately for you they did. I mean, imagine if your Mom didn't remember that last spot where the paperwork with the VIN was stashed? Without the VIN you'd still be searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack. What if Barry had no current record of the car or contact info for the owner? Without it you'd be hard pressed to trace the car to Japan. Then, what a coincidence it was that the owner was looking to sell when you contacted him? If he loved it too much you'd be hard pressed to pry it away from him. Like I said, it's a great story and congrats on completing your quest.

Kind of interesting that only after about 3 years the hood  is showing signs of bulging/warping.  Didn't think that happened until way later on.

Cool pic!

Hey guys, I have some news for you....

I received some documentation from the Oklahoma Tax Commission last week and contacted the original owner. We talked quite awhile and I asked him if he knew where the engine was. He said he had it swapped in 72 or 73 for a 440. He said let me try to find the guy that did the swap, he kept the block. He
called back later and gave me the guys name and number. I called him he said he put in a custom 78 ramcharger truck and told me who he sold it to. I called that gentleman but never heard back.

Anyway, I was at a Mopar event yesterday and came across a 6pak intake, 340 variety. My friend that was with me stopped and talked to the guy. We asked him where he got it and he said his friend, that has an AAR, also said his friend had a t/a block and intake that was complete. I asked him where he lived and he said Tulsa. I said do you know where your friend got his block? He said out of truck, I said a green ramcharger, he said I think so. He called the guy and got the number off of it, sure enough 308803, 4/6/1970..... So now what do I do? The engine is not in the AAR yet, but on a stand and wrapped up, was machined and painted 2 years ago. What would you do?  I'm contemplating swapping him.  His doesn't have a cam with it, so what would you guys do here?  Purple cam? Roller cam?  What have others done?

Kind of funny that the car made it all the way to Japan and the block has only gone 45 minutes from original owner's location. Also that my
dad searched for a block and found it in California, when the numbers matching block was right under his nose.....

Get your numbers block if available. I would want to do anything possible to get it

Yes, it would be in your best interest to secure the original block for that car (provided the current owner doesn't attempt to take you for a ride on the price). :2thumbs:

Is the guy willing to do a trade for it ATM?

I disagree. The car's value is tied to his father's ownership. All this will do is increase the potential selling price.

The appraised value of the car will increase no matter whether or not he sells the car. Being his Father's car, I'm sure it's "PRICELESS" to him.

Owning a rare Mopar such as a T/A the value of numbers matching motor greatly increases the value of the car. If you don't believe me...call around to a few of the more well known collectors or consignment sellers and ask their opinion of the difference in value of two identical cars one with matching numbers and one without.

If I were in your shoes, first I would determine whether or not it is indeed the correct block, then I would offer (up to)$5,000.00 plus your running T/A motor. :2cents:

Incredible story !  Congratulations on your successful search.  This story gives me hope that I'll one day find the original owner of my AAR. (all I know is the car was sold in Illinois)  I'd recommend you pick up some lottery tickets before your luck is all used up.

This story keeps getting better all the time. First you find your Dad's car all the way over in Japan. Then you locate the original motor that was pulled 40 freakin' years ago? What are the odds of that happening? I'd say about slim to none after that much time had past! It's incredible how everything is going your way on this venture. You are a virtual automotive archeologist! I think Devil (Ryan) has got some serious competition here. Congratulations. I love this story, it's simply amazing!  :2thumbs:

Whoa! Back the movie up, I must of missed part of it. What happened to the scene where our hero actually gets the numbers-matching block for the car? Last thing I knew he knew where it was but he didn't have it in his possession. Now he's installing it into his car? How did he actually get his hands on it? What did he have to do to pull that off? Details please of how our hero worked that deal  This story is great ... I can't stop watching!

So, the guy and I worked out a trade. Machined, balanced crank, rods, bearings and numbers matching block, for my block +cash to get my block machined and new pistons etc..... It actually isn't in my possession yet, no money has changed hands yet.  He wants to make sure my block hasn't already been bored 0.060 over or sleeved, if it hasn't, I will then pay him $2k and proceed with reassembling the numbers matching block, and putting it in my car....

I'm confused
A year older and bam you have enough for the car......... Must have been a VERY good year

Thanks, Brad. While I can't say that this required no work (ask Koby how many times we went back and forth over drafts) I can say I was motivated by the subject matter. I can't count how many pieces I've read that go like "I found a really rare car, then I pulled it into my 24x40 foot side garage and had my employees do a restoration so I can send it to Barrett Jackson." It was nice to see a person pursuing a car out of passion.

Hey guys, I'm at it again....

Trying to find my dad's first Plum Crazy T/A that he owned in 72-73. A few months ago, I found the check he got back from dealer after bank cashed it and dealer had written the VIN on it..

It was 4-speed, black top, black interior. Sold in 4/14 in North Hills, CA by Dave Denson. That's all I know for now. Here are some pics:

If it was anybody else I'd say there was no hope, but you seem to have the Golden Touch for this kind of thing

Those pictures were on ForEBodiesonly.com and his Facebook when he was trying to sell it. He passed away in 2/2015.

The picture with the girl is my mom by the car on her honeymoon in 5/1973.

Any idea how long ago the photo on the trailer was taken?   Those Posi-Traction Torque Twister tires haven't been around since the 70's.....

That was 2014 when Dave Denson bought it from guy in Texas. Dave only owned for a couple of weeks.

Just started reading this post and the Dave Densen part caught my eye. He was a close friend of mine until his passing last year. Dave showed me this TA and I came very close to draining my savings and buying it. I was blown away that every single part was still with the car. Dave actually talked me out of it because of the funky rear quarter work it needed.

This story still blows my mind ... what are the odds that both of those cars were still out there ... able to be found AND purchased?? It's almost beyond imagination that it has happened!  :2thumbs:

Randy, that's a nice thought :grinyes:

One I won't be reconnecting with was a '68 Super Bee ... a beautiful car, turquoise over white, 383 4-speed ... guy who bought it from me blew the motor and abandoned it ... city picked it up and it was claimed by the fire department ... yep, they deliberately burned that beauty down to the ground for training :crying:

Anyway, I digress ... back to you Koby and your amazing journey finding your Dad's T/A's ...

Hey guys, I found some car part invoices on the passenger side of car (between door and dash dated 1977. It had a name on it. I looked him up and called him. Nice guy. He owned car from 1974-2014. He sent me these vintage pics and this history. Hope you enjoy.

"We got married April 1974. That’s the pics with the stock wheels.
I got back from Viet Nam in Mid-1975 and got the indies.
Moved to California and blew the engine when a nut from the air breather went into the piston.
Got the engine rebuilt and moved back to Oklahoma when I was discharged from the Marine Corps, 1977.
Started college at OU and had the paint and body work done, got tired of getting tickets because my tires extended beyond the body. Cops in Norman were a pain in the a**. The hood was reinforced when I had the body work done because it was warping. If you look at your pictures you’ll see the hood has start to bow up.
The crunch in the hood was by from a frat rat at OU with no insurance.
We moved back to California in 1984 and I spun a main bearing in 1985 blowing the motor again.
It’s been garaged or towed from state to state since then."
