My other engine bay thread has lost 80% of it's photos due to software formatting and changing servers etc.
You have to go to page 10 of 14 to see photos, the rest are gone.
So post up that engine bay show or driver or no engine at all (if you wish).....Show us those Headers, those Snorkles and Pie tins we wanna see those valve covers, carb set-ups, Manifolds and more!
Now it's time we show the heart, the soul the ENGINE!
This thread will eventually replace the "Members Engine Bay Photos" in the Classics forum.
Although like many I don't mind hi-jacking please keep it minimal as this will be going into the Classics.
Less talk...more photos on this thread lads! Post 'em if you've got 'em!!!! :bigshades:
Please Post photos of engine bays ONLY.
Cheers,
NZ440R/T

This is a nightmare in progress. I'll let you know if I EVER finish. :eek4:

Here are my 71 Challenger RT and 70 Cuda engine bays.

The first pic is of the 392 when I first put it in the Cuda, and the second pic was taken after I put the dual four barrel setup and chrome valve covers on it.

Plum6Pak, I'm one step ahead of you! :icon16: Got the engine in today, installed it from underneath, very easy and fast to do it that way. Engine, trans, headers and k-member all in once, no scratches! Hey Goody, you should really concider TTI, they are worth every dime. Unmatched fit!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of you my good man!!!
That's the first thing I see in that engine bay photo, which is old now.
Since then I have a new correct booster, no stickers and it's overall in tidier condition.
Cheap photo-shop. It is off now, but I have no recent photos.
Cheers,

Too late to do it that way unless I yank the K frame back out. Might be worth a try though. Looks good Jvike, hope to follow in your steps real soon.
-
Looking good Plum6pak, I would recommend to do it the way I did it, then you won't worry about scratches. And you will have plenty of workspace when your're mounting the steeringbox, starter, trans, headers, you name it. It's was very easy and rewarding to be able to walk around the whole assembly when you're dealing with those things.

:cooldancing: This is a cool thread, I know you just wanted photos with very little dialogue but the finished ones are incredible and I cannot believe how many are at the inserting engine stage! :clapping:

Quick question and sorry to hijack, but from looking at everyone photos, why are some heater fan motors mounted from inside out, and some from outside in on the fire wall?

One outside in is an AC car and the others aren't.

One more of my old engine bay.....
PS: If you guys have some nice photos of engine bays you can post them up too.
It's a Members engine bay section sure, but, it also helps for reference and FAQ etc.
Cheers,

you guys are needing a purple engine bay with a motor in it. here's mine from a while ago. a little tiny though

Heres mine......

here is what ours looked like for a few days. I picked up the hemi and we put it on a dolly and rolled it under the car since there was no K frame and it is on a two post lift. We left it there for a few days. The original 340 is going back in it and the hemi is for the road runner.

Hey Locke, haven't welcomed you to the site yet! WELCOME!
I think Car Craft could learn a thing or two looking at some of the details on the previous picture and all the way back to the first! Nice engine bays I would say. Well, some will be nice but most are incredible and all are cool. :cooldancing:
-
the color in the engine bay is lighter than the body. might be because of the white primer I used inside with grey on the outside.

Changed the spark plugs today, and broke one of the plug wires, so I had to get some new ones. I think the engine bay look's better with the black wires, than it did with yellow.

Hey Choppin, I don't see any brake lines on yet and wondered if you were going to just route the crossover line in the stock location or run it somewhere else. I haven't installed mine yet and just wanted to see what you had in mind. That looks mighty sweet and clean, any progress since this was taken?

thing?

Houston, T minus and counting!

:roflsmiley: We have a neighbor that is quite a ways away that complains about the grandkids playing and making too much noise, we are each on an acre of property but she still whines about the noise. :stomp:
We actually got into it pretty good with them when they told my grandaughter to "shut up." :swear:
Can't wait till I see her outside, then I'm gonna fire this up and really give her something to squak about!! Visit from the police may be comeing soon. :grinyes:
Chevyconvert, the color of the blocks can get complicated but a lot of it has to do with the year, in 67-68 the 273's and 68 318 / 340 were painted red, 67-68 383 were the blue green color, 69 383-440 and some later 71 340 and 440's in Cudas and Challengers were Hemi orange, the Hemi's were painted "street Hemi" orange, not the same as hemi orange. Clear as mud?
-
Sounds like time for a lawn job :lol2:

70-71 4 bbl big blocks and the later 71 340's were all hemi orange with the exception of some shaker hood optioned cars that were painted turquoise. Every 383 2 bbl engine was painted turquoise. 72-74 318 and 340 were painted Chrysler blue as well as 74 360 engines.
-
and DO NOT use the Mopar street hemi orange spray cans....it looks horrible....like orangeish-pinkish-yuck....
i am now soda blasting my engine and shooting it with the gun....

Non HP motors were never orange though.

I've seen 383 4bbl cars with A/C painted torquoise in Cudas (330HP motors). Also seen some 71 340's painted blue, some orange.

Plum6pak, never saw your response on this thread. Actually haven't checked this thread out in a while. Some progress but it's slow. I am going to route the brake lines in basically the stock areas. Will probably be using an aftermarket adjustable prop valve. Few pictures below of the small progress.

few other pics.

I ended up routing my brake line cross over in the original location too.

Shoot me some pictures ( closeups ) of your brake lines/routing. Like to see them. Either post them here or email me : Honor74@aol.com
Thanks, Chris

the engine bay of my duster. it was buildt as a drag car, so no extra effort was put into the engine bay by its builders. it still has its factory coat of brown paint..and 22 years of dirt. im told the engine has ben in there for 7 or more years , and it shows the prior owners lack of concern for its appearance.
-
Finally got my 71 Cuda back from the body shop two weeks ago and have all of the wiring and peripherals installed. Next week, the engine goes in. :bananasmi I can't wait to hear her roar to life again.

It was a pain in the a$$ and my hands were killing me, but it's amazing what a little paint could do. The Black was old & ugly. I stripped & sanded the entire compartment. Alot nicer, I still don't like the color of the car, but it will have to do until I do the whole car back to the original color. (Amber Sherwood Metallic)...
-
Nice job, looks like it was well worth it! Big improvement.

That's beautiful vinb

Love that Sublime with the Black Shaker....

Gotta add my new one.

Here is a pic of my engine bay so far. I think in the future I will get a old style dual snorkel air cleaner cover and powder coat black.
-
I'm jealous of the amount of room under the hood when you have a small block... I'm tired of scraping my nuckles trying to take the exhaust manifolds off my 383.. I couldn't imagine having a hemi. :faint:
-
OK guys, finally decided to post my sorry pic in this section after a few months. It looks like this thing hasnt been touched since it left the factory, and I intend to keep it that way. Well, I'll clean it up some :lol2:
This was taken the day I bought it, had been sitting for a while. Not the prettiest pic, but thought I would join in with the fun

Been awhile since I've visited this thread. Mainly because I haven't had any engine work done yet.
Next week, I should have some new pics, since I'm using my tax returns to have my engine overhauled, so to speak. We'll FINALLY find that damn oil leak and fix it!

It does not look as good as the outside but here it is:

My '68 Cuda.. :burnout: :clapping:

I am hoping that mine has a lot bigger air cleaner soon, but here is how it currently sits.

Sigh... Should FINALLY have the pics tonight, light permitting. What was only supposed to take 2 days has now taken 6. But, the shop is the best in town, so I know everything is done right. Just hope it doesn't set me back much more than the estimate. Oh well. It'll be nice to be able to just cruise around again.
Cowboy, I don't think I've ever seen a picture of your 68. I love the A body Barracudas, especially the 2nd gens like ours.

Ghost, very nice :2thumbs:
Now all you need is to paint that air cleaner and it will look 1000% better.
Not to be nit picky or anything
-
Air cleaner will hopefully be replaced later this year, when I get the 4 bbl setup for the engine.
-
Can you say Hemi??
-
alrighty im done screwing up my engine bay for awhile lol.
circuit breaker for the alt output is gone off the pass inner fender, power brakes gone, some inner fender wiring cleaned up, still looking for an idea to cover up the bulkhead connections, just little stuff
-
Looks good and clean, but to me it just looks like something is missing since the stuff is hidden. Your car, your choice.
-
:2thumbs:
-
I thought I would add some of mine also. First the T/A and then the Road Runner.
-
Looks good and clean, but to me it just looks like something is missing since the stuff is hidden. Your car, your choice.
Yea i can see where some would think that. I really had no use for a lot of the stuff, so that started that ball rollin. Its ok for now, someday down the line i'd like to smooth it up in there, weld up some holes. I like the idea of a very basic engine, in a clean/clutter free bay. Very simple, clean and tidy look to it....without the gawdy chrome and such.
-
Here it is.. as it was purchased. Soon it'll be sporting all new wiring and a new alternator.
-
Man I love looking at all those engine bays. Here's mine, first of my 70 vert, then the Cuda project as it is now.
Goody you know we want to see pics of your dads new ride! Well I do at any rate.

Well it's a long way from done, but has come a long way since last spring when I posted the empty (just painted) bay. No way can I hold a candle to you guys, but on the other hand I'm pretty happy with my first attempt at this whole deal! Kudos to some super work going on round here! :2thumbs: Rich.

It does not look to bad but it still needs a lot of work. i am slightly anal and have started to fix some of the minor things that bug me. I hope by next year to be back to 100 percent original.

Don`t think that I ever would close the hood with that engine bay.  :2thumbs:

>:( Ok, stop laughing! I know, not that pretty but it's the way it looks from the 70's.
The black stuff on the inner wheel wells is undercoat from the 70's done by the original owner. Only thing I did as far as paint goes was to paint the valve covers when they were off when I replacing the VC gaskets.
Engine has never been rebuilt, 106K miles. Factory orange paint dab above mastercylinder. :)

Just a warning with that brake master cylinder. Not sure where you got it, but i have a very similar one, with the gold finish. Bought it from a guy off moparts, anyway I had quite an issue with brake fluid leaking from the caps. So far i've gone to the junkyard and gotten some factory mopar caps and i think its solved. With all that brand new paint, if you aren't running DOT 5 its something to really watch!!

Yeah I saw that you had that problem, I did at first when I filled the MC to the very top, I lowered the level(not much) and now it seems good. I'll keep an eye on the level as the pads wear.
Thanks for the heads up!
Tom :2thumbs:

Have you had many miles on it since? Mine never leaked sittin still, it was always cornering and such..not that i dive into any corners or slide out :D

I only got about 350 miles on this set-up so far with the new motor. I have been sideways and that stuff already. So far so good. I just got back from a show/cruise tonight and everything looks dry.

This is my 543 stroker. I finally got it installed in my Challenger and running after removing the old 440 and having engine bay painted. I replaced a lot of the under-the-hood wiring as well. The motor is quite nasty and made over 600 HP on the dyno with 651 ft/lbs of torque. As you can see, I still need to make up some clips and hook up the kickdown linkage ect. It looks 150% better than that old rattle can black paint!! I know one thing; at least for me, doing an engine swap by yourself isn't easy and I was a little rusty on a complete changeout as I hadn't done one in over 20 years. I had a lot of headaches to work thru (had to notch out the K-frame for the external oiling sys), but it runs now like mad hornet!! Let's burn some rubber now!! :burnout: :burnout: :burnout:

I just purchased a 73 Barracuda that has a special order option code for the color and although its faded and I can't be sure, I believe its the same color as yours above. The previous owner couldn't find out what color the code stood for. Can you tell me what color that is? Mine has a white vinyl top, stripe & interior and I'm not sure I like that color combo or not. One thought is to keep the color but change all of the white to black. Gorgeous car you have there!
Thanks, Jim

My 440 Sixpack.
Sorry about the real "Super Bee". My mate was showing off how much resolution his new camera has.
-
A little cleaner. I need to detail it out a bit more. New hoses, belts, paint the alternator pulley, radiator, MC, block, headers, horn, fix my heater switch so I can hook up the blower motor and add the heater lines. The lever is stuck on full hot. New dist cap... By the time I get al that done it shoudl be just about ready for a big block. :)

Just shows you that no matter how fancy the camera, they still fail to show the difference between Street Hemi Orange engine paint and Hemi Orange high impact body paint.
I would prefer it if they actually were colour matched. ;)

That looks fantastic! How did you re-do the cadmium plating on your brake booster?
-
That's zinc di-chromate (sometimes called "yellow zinc"), not cad.

Forgot about this thread.......This was done in August/Sep... Keep in mind that the engine was not removed from the bay to do this............. The guy in photo

That windshield washer bottle on the left looks huge, or is that an overflow bottle?
-
That's the washer bottle. It has the long kneck because of the charcole canister. The canister also made it necessary to move the horns up front...right behind the grill.
Steve's right about the plating. There are no cad plated parts on these cars. It's my understanding that the parts are clear zinc plated first...then are dipped in a second solution to get the gold/rainbow color.
-
Here's mine...

This is a bit misleading as the engine compartment in my R/T SE had been trimmed out shortly before work was stopped. The motor and trans are bolted in but little else.
I recently unboxed the air breather and set it on top of the intake (as no carb is on yet) just to get an idea.

I think it's a 484", just a tad over 500 horse and about 550 ft lbs of torque . With a real mild custom ground hydraulic cam that'll idle at 900 with no problem

I don't remember taking that first picture. Only reason I know is the master cap has been painted. The black doesn't stay on the body I've found so I at least painted the cap.
Doesn't look too bad. I threw the belts getting on it right before a hill & got it hot spraying the bay with antifreeze/water.

Here's mine after the resto.

Hi,
very interesting thread, as I always look out for engine bays to compare it to mine. Very good for little details. I've put a picture of my engine bay in my :newbie: thread here: Two 70s from Germany (http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=80460.0)
It's a picture from the first sight of the car. Looks a bit more complete right now and little details following one by one.

Thanks Matt!! Was engine dynoed prior to shipping to me. 660hp and 632ft-lb of torque. Its a mild build alloy 540 on purpose, almost "de-tuned" for better streetability. Plenty left in it. We plan to tune the EFI and squeeze a few more ponies out and get it to a nice even 700hp+ merely for the fact it sounds like a better number to someone like me with OCD hahaha. The engine builder said with the EFI and mild tune we should net 18-22mpg as well. Can't wait!!!

BEAUTIFUL bud!!! Looks so tidy and tasty!! :ylsuper: :bananasmi
Thanks! There really isn't much more to show lol. The engine bay is pretty much complete. I put the wiper mech in with the cowl vents and wiper motor and, yeah that's the only difference since I posted those photos haha. Wiring and washer bottle hose will be routed behind the fenders, 6AL and other goodies up under the dash (since I removed the heater box there's STACKS of room), thatttttttt's about it lol. I'll post more as I go on. I'm under the car now, fuel lines, pump, tank, driveshaft and exhaust are next. Then wiring, interior re-install and then cert, registration, warrant of fitness, tune and VROOOOOOM!! :naughty: :smokin:

Thanks man! Still some things to do before first fire up.
I remember your engine, built by Tim@FHO right. Mine came from him as well.
Keep up the good work! :2thumbs:

What's this thing you got? What's the engine and is this a carb or EFI?
Please share some information, it really looks interesting!

It's a normal 440 with the Edelbrock ProFlo XT EFI manifold and fuel rails. Megasquirt EFI computer with full sequential injection and spark. No distributor. Crank position sensor is from a Taurus, cam position sensor is from a 6cyl jeep and the rest are generic GM except for the Innovate O2 sensor. The throttle body is an LS style that was slightly modified for the manifold. Coils are from a GM truck and injectors are from a Ford van. It's sort of a Franken-FI.
It runs/drives well and is really smooth. I still have some minor initial start up and idle tuning but I'll get back to that next spring.
