Jinxed myself. Blown tranny
« on: June 18, 2017 - 10:53:28 pm »
Couple weeks ago I posted that I felt I was finally done with my car and it ran great.
Today was coming to the last intersection leaving town and car in front of me was poking along. I was in already in 3rd, floored it and car didn't move quick enough for me so I then downshifted to 2nd. Blew past the car and when I went to shift back to 3rd, grind, 4th grind but 5th was ok. (TKO500 tranny) I was able to limp home without having to slip the clutch too much. Once I was home and stopped, I tried each gear including reverse and it wouldn't even move. Only 5th still works.  :swear: :banghead: :pullinghair: :stomp:
Now I got to figure out how to pull the tranny without breaking my back and other bones and a good shop to rebuild it. Ya know what REALLY gets me ?  Last Tues I was at the Power Tour and talked to American Powertrain about my tranny. I asked them if it could handle the torque of a 383 if I were to drag race it. They laughed like it was a stupid question and said it would. That made me feel really cocky about it and abused it more than I ever had before. I get this thing back together, I ain't saying sheet to anyone !!   :D

Does the shifter actually go to the locations? Or does it only want to shift in & out of 5th?

It goes to each location like theres nothing there. You do not feel it "clicking" into place.

Sounds more like a internal linkage issue than a gear issue....

Hopefully your right and its nothing major. I don't know anything about trannys so I can only hope that it isn't because it couldn't handle the power of a stock HP383. I drained the oil out of it and there was some small black particles that felt like they might have been rubber, or nylon or something of that nature. Fluid started out red, then turned dark which I expected due to about 12,000miles of use. Hoping to pull it out this weekend and then try to find someone locally that has experience with Tremecs.

Please post what you learn. I put a five speed Tremec in my 64 Vette. So far, I'm happy with it but it only has around 500 miles. I only put about 300 HP to it but I can't see your stock 383 being too much for yours.

I'm a little surprised your fluid was dark. My unit required ATF type fluid but hard to imagine there being enough heat to darken it. By the way, was there any warning signs before failure? I ask only because I notice my second gear is just a hair tighter than the other gears.

No warning at all. I attribute the darkness to slight metal wear due to gear meshing etc. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know.

I suggest starting with this link...  But first turn the audio off...  Not terrible but not helpful either...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKn772xgwec

Then continue looking at other videos... It won't be serious & you don't need any professional assistance....

Apparently a common issue amongst Mustang & Camaro owners.... 1st to 2nd you can beat on it, 3rd to 4th you can beat on it.... 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd you've got o be very precise with the shifter or it can grind & find no gears.....   the video above should get you shifting again...

And this one explains it...
